A SINGER’S GUIDE… (A SERIES): #2

IMPORTANT: I’m not teaching you how to sing—I just wanted to give tips on how to maintain the quality of your voice. and you don’t need to be an opera singer to follow these tips! classical music is the foundation of all music (i.e., why pianists are first taught Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart), so it’s connected to all types of music in one way or another.

something that I love about being classically trained is the fact that we’re taught the ins-and-outs of our instruments, what’s important (and why), etc. I wanted to share what I’ve been taught over the years (I’ve been training and taking lessons since I was 7), and hopefully others can find use of it in their own lives (whether it be professional, educational, hobby, or just curious!).

I plan to continue the series, and I hope you enjoy!

This article dives into practical advice that can significantly impact your vocal performance. One key aspect is understanding how certain foods and beverages can affect your voice. For instance, dairy products can cause mucus build-up, making it difficult for your voice to sound clear. Spicy foods, while flavorful, can irritate your throat and lead to unwanted coughing, which can damage your vocal cords over time. Additionally, cold drinks may hinder the flexibility of your vocal cords, so it's wise to avoid them, especially before performances. Chocolate, despite its mood-boosting properties, contains sugar and caffeine, both of which can negatively influence vocal range and clarity. It’s essential to exercise caution with diuretics like coffee and alcohol, as they may lead to dehydration, impacting the vocal cords' ability to function optimally. Overall, the lesson is clear: understanding your body is vital. Just like any instrument, it requires care and maintenance. By listening to your body and adapting your dietary choices accordingly, you can ensure that your voice remains in peak condition. With continued practice and awareness, you can help optimize your vocal performance for any occasion. Always remember that your body is your instrument—treat it well!
