Ahau, Kan, Caban

As the gears in the cosmic calendar turn and churn the fabric of time and space, we move into the Day sign Ahau. As the universe’s mechanism causes our Sun 🌞 to rise we transition into the 4th day (Kan) of this Caban Trecena (13 day cycle).

In Maya cosmology, Ahau in Yucatec (or Ajpu in K'iche' Maya) represents the sun and embodies the essence of heroism, much like the Hero Twins of creation myths. Its power extends across physical, mental, and emotional realms, symbolizing triumph in both external challenges, such as battles, and internal struggles, like overcoming emotional and psychological obstacles.

The glyph of Ahau, depicting a hunter with a blowgun, signifies its association with hunting, leadership, and the balance between life and death. Ahau's dual nature reflects both light and shadow, representing noble qualities like courage and intuition, while also embodying darker emotions such as rage and vengeance, reminding us of the complexities of human nature.

Ahau is a patron of beauty and life, governing solar and lunar eclipses, with the eagle and human beings as its totems. Ahau is linked with black and the West. On Ahau days, Maya communities seek wisdom and growth through ceremonies that guard against negative traits, fostering both emotional and spiritual development.

Kan / Kahib (4)

The Number Four

In the sacred Tzolk'in calendar, Kan (Yucatec) , or Kahib' (K'iche)' Maya, represents the number Four, symbolizing wholeness and stability in the universe. It embodies balance through the four cardinal directions, elements, seasons, and phases of the sun’s journey each day. This number underpins life itself, connecting with the four sacred colors of corn—red, yellow, black, and white—each representing both a direction and humanity’s diversity.

Kan is deeply woven into Mayan cosmology, with four pillars supporting Earth and Sky and four roads leading through Xibalba, the Underworld. Those born on a Four day are believed to carry grounding energy, strengthening stability in relationships and communities.

More than a number, Kan (4) is a symbol of interconnectedness and harmony, urging us to view existence as a unified whole, where every element contributes to the cosmic order.

Guardian Deity of the 4th Day

Tonatiuh, the Sun god, presides over the Fourth Day (Kan in Yucatec Maya, Kahib' in K'iche Maya). As the embodiment of solar energy, Tonatiuh is often portrayed as a warrior adorned with an eagle headdress, a symbol of strength, leadership, and the life-giving power of the sun.

In both Toltec and Maya art, Tonatiuh is depicted as a majestic figure, frequently appearing as a regal Maya king in the carvings and murals of Chichen Itzá. His imagery highlights his central role in the cosmos, with radiant adornments and a representation of the sun disk, illustrating his connection to vitality, growth, and the cycles of time. Through his warrior-like demeanor, Tonatiuh reflects the enduring force of the sun as a source of life and cosmic order.

The cosmic date is, 4 (Kan), the day sign is Ahau of this Caban Trecena, or in Gregorian terms, January 27th 2025.

Again I ask, what would the OG Daykeepers advise today as the energies of the Caban trecena intertwines with the energies of the Ahau Day sign and the number Kan (4) tone?

In modern times, the combination of Ahau (Ajpu), Kan (Kahib), and Caban (Kab'an) reflects a powerful balance of inspiration, potential, and grounded action. Our ancestors viewed Ahau, the energy of the sun, as a source of enlightenment and truth, encouraging clarity and leadership. Today, it manifests as moments of insight along wirh the courage to pursue a higher path with integrity.

Kan, represents creation and abundance it reminds us of the importance of nurturing new ideas and opportunities. It’s the spark of potential that, when cultivated, grows into something meaningful. Caban, the energy of Earth and movement, provides the grounding needed to align our actions with the cycles of nature and ancestral wisdom.

Together, these energies call us to illuminate our path with Ahau’s clarity, nurture Kan’s potential, and move forward with Caban’s grounded wisdom. This means taking deliberate actions that align with your values and purpose—whether it's pursuing a creative idea, solving a problem, or making decisions that contribute to personal or collective growth. Our ancestors understood that this combination requires focus, mindfulness, and a willingness to align your actions with a larger vision, ensuring each step is brimming with purpose.

Reflection of the Day

This combination in the Tzolk’in resonates deeply with my life experiences, reminding me that pain and difficulty are as fleeting as a storm. The darkest moments may feel endless, but eventually, the clouds part, and the sunlight breaks through, bringing clarity and warmth. I’ve come to see these storms as necessary—they clear the way for new growth.

Some of the most painful moments I’ve endured weren’t physical but emotional. Like most people, I experienced heartbreak when I lost my so-called “first love.” At the time, it felt like the world was crumbling, but as I grew, I realized that maybe it wasn’t love after all. I moved on, and life brought new adventures. Yet, some relationships weren’t just fleeting heartbreaks—they were toxic. I invested time, energy, and even finances into people who didn’t value me. I was stuck in cycles of breaking up, making up, and falling back into the same destructive patterns. It was a storm I couldn’t escape until I finally understood: I couldn’t change them. They were who they were, and staying in those relationships was unhealthy for me.

After my last toxic relationship, I turned to psilocybin for guidance. I took more than a recreational dose. During that trip, I saw my life play out like a movie. I watched myself working 15-16 hour days, six days a week, to support someone who accused me of neglect simply because I wasn’t home enough. I wasn’t familiar with manipulation tactics back then, but that moment of clarity showed me how deeply I’d been trapped. Toward the end of the trip, I had a realization: I’m a good person. I could die right now and feel at peace with my life. In that moment, I threw my hands up and shouted, “I’m ready to die!” And just then, the first light of day peeked through the blinds. The warmth of the sunlight on my face felt like a divine sign. It wasn’t my time to die—I had more to do. Watching that sunrise became sacred to me, like a promise from God: As long as the sun rises and I’m alive to see it, I have another chance to live and find love. That trip lasted six or seven hours, and by the end of it, I was completely over my ex. The world works in mysterious ways because not long after, I met the love of my life.

Meeting her was like sunshine after a long rainy season. She brought purpose and joy back into my life, and together we built something beautiful. We adopted Charlie, our Pitbull son, who became such an important part of our lives. He wasn’t allowed in our apartment building, but we committed to him, and that commitment brought us closer. Charlie lived nearly 15 years—not bad for a Pitbull—but losing him was one of the most devastating moments of my life. It felt like the ground had been ripped out from under me. I thought I knew pain from breakups, but this was entirely different. It was empty, crushing, and overwhelming. I thought the unconditional love he gave us was gone, and I didn’t know where to direct the love I still had for him.

I was wrong. His love wasn’t gone—it had transformed. Both my wife and I felt his presence after he passed. We read Signs from Pets in the Afterlife by Lyn Ragan and The Amazing Afterlife of Animals by Karen A. Anderson, which brought us comfort, knowing we weren’t alone in these experiences. These books reminded us that love is timeless, infinite, and that the bonds we share with our animals transcend physical death.

A surfer I met in Malibu shared a ritual I’ll never forget. He had just buried his Pitbull and told me to hold my dog as he passed and breathe in his final breaths. He explained that it ensures his essence stays with you and can even pass into your next dog. My wife and I did this with Charlie, and when we adopted Totec, our new dog, we immediately noticed he carried so many of Charlie’s quirks. Dogs have unique personalities, but Totec reminds us of Charlie in the most unexpected ways. We named him after Xipe Totec, the Aztec deity of spring, life, and rebirth, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, and renewal.

Looking back, I see how the energies of Ahau, Kan, and Caban guided me through these moments. Ahau’s light brought clarity, showing me the way through the storms. Kan helped me nurture new beginnings, from finding the love of my life to building a family with her and Charlie. And Caban taught me to honor the cycles of life, reminding me that even in loss, love doesn’t end—it evolves, transforms, and continues to guide us. These energies continue to shape my life, teaching me to move forward with gratitude, purpose, and an open heart.
