Reflection of the Day

The journey of discovery is often shaped by the environment we grow up in, the people around us, and the limitations we don’t even realize exist until something breaks through. As a child, my musical world was shaped by what surrounded me: oldies, Hip-Hop, reggae, punk, Latin freestyle—whatever my parents and sisters played. It was a cocoon, a world where choices were limited to what was within reach. Then one day, my sister handed me a metallic green mixtape filled with hardcore gabber. She didn’t like it, but the moment I pressed play, something in me did. It wasn’t just a new sound; it was a doorway. From there, I sought out gabber mixtapes, found myself drawn to underground raves at an age when most wouldn’t dare, and became a loyal supporter of Ron D Core, Pure Acid Mixtapes, and artists like Delta 9, Tron, and Efex. When Efex transitioned from gabber to hard trance, I followed, my vision widening with every beat. That led me to Thee-O, Nigel Richards, Kage, and a spectrum of sounds I never would have known if I had stayed locked into one genre.

Then came Jungle and Drum & Bass—a sound that didn’t just pull me in but demanded loyalty. The culture around it bred a sense of exclusivity, an elitism that said if you listened to anything else, you weren’t a "true Junglist." And for a while, I let that pressure influence me. But the eagle’s sight stretches far beyond a single perspective, and eventually, I saw through the nonsense. I wasn’t just a listener; I was actively spreading the sound, bringing Jungle and DNB into a record shop in Lomita that supplied the Harbor Area of Los Angeles. I ordered records from all over Europe, sourced from local distributors like Free Burning, and played a role in expanding the scene. So when newcomers tried to gatekeep, it was laughable—my actions had already carved a space for Jungle and DNB in places it might not have reached otherwise.

Now, I move through clubs and festivals freely, exploring every sound I love—Hard Trance, Techno, Jungle, DNB, House, Breaks and Hip-Hop —without feeling the need to conform to a single label. The same way an eagle flies without questioning the sky, music should be explored without boundaries. Some of the greatest sounds emerge from the fusion of styles, the remixing of influences that wouldn’t exist without stepping beyond the familiar. Let your spirit roam, embrace what calls to you, and never let outside voices dictate where your passion takes you.
