As a fellow Westie, crossing from west to east for a bowl of ramen sounded crazy… until I took the first bite 🍜
This shoyu-style tonkotsu ramen was so rich, creamy, and deeply savoury that it honestly felt like a trip to Japan — way easier than booking a flight from Singapore 😂✈️ It is not like the usual Shio / Shoyu ramen with a clear base as the chef has perfected it with his own interpretation.
The broth was intensely flavourful with that perfect umami punch, the noodles had the ideal chewy bite, and the chashu was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The shoyu bowl had the chashu flambé which gave the pork a smoked bite alongside thicker noodles while the tonkotsu had more traditional style chashu with the traditional thin noodles. Every bowl was unbelievably generous, loaded with toppings and packed with authentic Japanese flavours from the first slurp to the last drop.
Value for what youre having, but do take note its a 8 seater restaurant so expect a slight wait. A one man show where chef is the DJ (anime soundtracks), chef, cashier and waiter but he works nimbly. If this is the closest thing to Japan without leaving Singapore, I’m making the journey again 🍥🔥

The intimate setting with only eight seats means there can be a short wait, but the cozy ambiance enriched by anime soundtracks playing in the background adds to the charm. Watching the chef expertly multitask—handling everything from cooking to serving—is impressive and makes the experience feel personal and authentic.
One tip I'd share is to arrive slightly before peak hours to avoid a longer queue. The unique flambéed chashu in the shoyu ramen adds a smoky depth that perfectly complements the thicker noodles. Meanwhile, the tonkotsu ramen sticks to tradition with thin noodles and a comforting, creamy broth that’s full of umami flavors.
I found the pricing very reasonable considering the quality and generous toppings you get; both bowls come with a soft-boiled egg, perfectly marinated, enhancing the overall richness. It's rare to find such authentic Japanese ramen that rivals what you'd find in Japan itself without having to travel.
For ramen lovers in Singapore seeking an authentic taste and willing to make the little journey eastward, Ramen-ya is a hidden gem that doesn't disappoint. It’s an ideal spot for those craving deeply savory broth paired with tender chashu and expertly cooked noodles wrapped in a heartfelt, one-man operation atmosphere.
