FUN THINGS TO DO IN CHICAGO WITH KIDS

After many trips to Chicago, these have been some of our favorite activities to do with our kids! All of these activities are within walking distance (or a very short Uber) from The Magnificent Mile area.

1. The Bean: A must visit if you are in Chicago! A fun place to take pictures and wander around. There is also a Nutella restaurant very close by!

2. Shedd Aquarium: it is the 3rd largest aquarium in the western hemisphere!

3. Seneca Park: there is amazing shopping on The Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave). But our Littles are never into shopping. There is a really nice playground one block away from Michigan Ave. It has several play structures that would appeal to 1-4 year olds and other play structures that would appeal to bigger kids! My husband will bring our kids here to play while I do a little shopping!

4. Camp Chicago: a fun shop and play experience where kids can play, color, and explore! Their theme is always changing and it was really fun and unique.

5. Jojo’s Shake Bar: this is a great lunch spot! Get some lunch and the coolest milkshake your kids have ever seen!

6. Sloomoo Institute: an interactive and tactile slime experience.

7. Navy Pier: an outdoor boardwalk with a Ferris wheel, outdoor games, and stunning views of Lake Michigan!

8. Ice Cream Museum: an immersive museum dedicated to all things ice cream. Lots of samples throughout and a sprinkle pool at the end!

(Not pictured) if you have older kids you should also check out the Skydeck and 360 Chicago for some fun ways to get great views of the city!

... Read moreChicago truly shines as a family-friendly destination, and after several amazing trips, I've gathered even more insider tips and expanded on some fantastic spots to make your visit smoother and more fun! Beyond the core attractions, a little planning goes a long way when you’re exploring with little ones. First off, when visiting the Shedd Aquarium, my biggest tip is to go early, right when it opens, especially if you want to avoid the biggest crowds. My kids were absolutely mesmerized by the beluga whales in the Oceanarium and the colorful fish in the Caribbean Reef. Pre-booking your tickets online is a huge time-saver, letting you walk right in and start your aquatic adventure without a hitch. It’s an immersive experience that often takes up a good chunk of the day, so plan for a lunch break inside or grab a bite nearby. While Navy Pier is famous for its iconic Ferris wheel and stunning Chicago skyline views, there's even more to explore. We found that taking one of the short boat tours from the Pier offered a unique perspective of the city from Lake Michigan. Plus, there are often street performers, sweet treat vendors, and seasonal events that add to the lively atmosphere. Don't rush through it; let the kids enjoy the spontaneity of the outdoor games and shows. Near The Bean (Cloud Gate), a definite must-visit is Maggie Daley Park. It's an absolute paradise for kids and adults alike! This park is a short walk from The Bean and offers an incredible playground with climbing walls, massive slides, and unique structures suitable for various age groups. In warmer months, they even have mini-golf, and in winter, an ice-skating ribbon. It's the perfect, free spot for kids to burn off energy after posing for photos at Cloud Gate, and it’s a wonderful way to save a little money while still having a blast. For meals, beyond the spectacular milkshakes at Jojo's Shake Bar, Chicago offers so many kid-friendly dining options. Trying a classic deep-dish pizza is practically a rite of passage! Places like Lou Malnati's or Giordano's are always a huge hit with my family and make for a memorable meal. Also, consider packing a small bag with snacks and water, especially for younger children. This can be a lifesaver during travel time between attractions or while waiting for food. Getting around Chicago is surprisingly easy. The CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) trains and buses are efficient and cover most major areas. For short distances, walking is great, especially around the Magnificent Mile, but comfortable shoes are a must for everyone! Ride-sharing services are also readily available if little legs get tired. If you're visiting multiple major attractions like the Shedd Aquarium, Skydeck, or Field Museum, investing in a CityPASS can offer significant savings on admission. And remember, spots like Seneca Park and Maggie Daley Park provide fantastic, free entertainment, giving your wallet a break. Consider the season you visit: Summer is vibrant and full of festivals, but it can be hot and crowded. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather for exploring, while winter brings festive lights, ice skating, and cozy indoor activities, though some outdoor options might be limited. Regardless of when you go, Chicago with kids is an adventure waiting to happen!
