Camino Training

Training for the Camino de Santiago is not just about physical preparation but also about understanding your body’s needs, especially when undertaking the journey over the age of 50. From my experience, one of the key aspects is finding the right footwear—testing brands like Brooks can make a significant difference in comfort and injury prevention during long walks. Also, creating a consistent schedule that mimics the daily distances you expect to cover on the Camino helps your body adapt progressively. For example, in week 4 of my training, I increased my walking distance to simulate the Camino Coastal Route, which is known for its varying terrain and elevation changes. This approach reduces the risk of fatigue and prepares you mentally for the journey ahead. Hydration and nutrition cannot be overlooked; carrying light, high-energy snacks and learning how to manage meals on the route are essential. Stretching and recovery techniques, such as gentle yoga or foam rolling, helped me maintain flexibility and ease post-walk soreness. Ultimately, listening to your body and adapting your plan as needed is crucial. Training for the Camino at any age is about resilience and enjoyment, and with the right preparation, it can be an incredibly rewarding adventure.
