How I Grow New Plants For FREE

Whenever my pothos and prayer plant gets too long, I give them a little trim and instead of tossing the cuttings, I turn them into brand new plants! 🪴

I love the process. It feels so satisfying to watch those little roots grow and it’s way easier than you might think.

Just cut, wait, and pot:

1.Snip a healthy vine with at least one node

2.Pop it in water (no leaves in the water)

3.Wait for roots to grow. usually takes a month or so.

4.Pot it up once the roots are a few inches long. ( or you can choose to keep them in the water like my monstera)

And that’s it! Free plants, zero waste 🫶 I haven’t seen healthy rosemary, basil or mints at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I also try to propagate rosemary from grocery but no luck! Let me know if you have any tips!

... Read morePropagating houseplants like pothos and prayer plants is an excellent way to expand your indoor garden without any cost. As described in the article, the key is to cut healthy vines containing at least one node, since nodes are the points where roots will emerge. From the OCR content, it is clear that placing cuttings in clean water in a bright spot — avoiding direct sunlight — helps encourage root development. Refreshing the water every 3-5 days prevents bacterial growth and keeps the cuttings healthy. Typically, roots start growing in about one month, as confirmed by showing examples of root progress after weeks and months. Once roots are several inches long, transferring the cutting to soil mixed with perlite improves the soil’s aeration and drainage, enhancing the plant’s chances of thriving. Alternatively, some plants like monstera can be kept in water indefinitely as water plants. To maximize success, make sure to snip cuttings just below a node since roots sprout from there. Remove leaves from the submerged portion to prevent rot. Keeping cuttings away from direct sunlight but in a bright environment helps photosynthesis without stressing the plant. Maintaining cleanliness and fresh water is crucial during the rooting stage. Despite success with pothos and prayer plants, propagating woody herbs like rosemary or basil can be more challenging. These herbs often need different propagation conditions such as higher humidity, temperature control, or specific rooting hormones. For herb enthusiasts, experimenting with propagation trays, misting, or rooting hormone powders might improve success. Using this propagation method reduces waste, saves money, and provides a rewarding way to nurture your plant collection. It also offers educational insights into plant biology and growth cycles, promoting sustainable indoor gardening practices.
