Beginner’s Guide to Plant Tag Terms

It’s interesting that every plant is different and has their own preferences.

Plant tags tell you everything from how much sun a plant needs, to how often to water, to the right soil and fertilizer.

I put together a simple guide to help beginners decode those common terms so you know exactly what your new plant needs to thrive. Save this for your next plant shopping trip! 🪴

☀️ Sunlight

- Full Sun: Needs at least 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily.

- Partial Sun / Partial Shade: 3–6 hours of direct sun; morning sun + afternoon shade is usually best.

- Full Shade: Less than 3 hours of direct sun; does well in indirect or dappled light.

💧 Water Need

- Keep Soil Moist: Water regularly so the soil doesn’t dry out.

- Moderate/ Average Water: Let the top inch of soil dry, then water.

- Drought Tolerant/ Low Water: Likes to dry completely between waterings.

- Well-Drained Soil: Make sure the pot/ground doesn’t stay soggy (use pots with drainage holes).

🌿 Fertilizer

- Fertilize Regularly: Add plant food every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

- Heavy Feeder: every 1–2 weeks with diluted liquid fertilizer.

- Light Feeder: every 2–3 months in growing season, or less.

🌱 Soil

- Well-Draining Soil: Soil that doesn’t stay soggy. Add perlite, sand, or use cactus/succulent mix.

- Rich Soil: Full of organic matter, holds nutrients and moisture well. A good all-purpose potting mix usually works.

- Sandy Soil: Light, drains quickly; often means the plant doesn’t like wet.

- Acidic Soil: Lower pH (like for azaleas, blueberries). You can buy “acidic” or “ericaceous” potting mix.

- Neutral/Alkaline Soil: Regular potting soil usually works.

- Moist, Well-Drained soil: Water often, but soil shouldn’t be soggy.

It’s for both indoor and outdoor plants!

... Read morePlant tags provide crucial care information that can make a significant difference in your plant's health and growth. Besides the basics of sunlight, water, fertilizer, and soil preferences, it's important to understand that some plants have seasonal habits such as dormancy. For example, plumerias, as mentioned on their labels, lose their leaves and go dormant during winter in cooler climates, resuming growth when temperatures are favorable. When selecting soil, consider the plant’s natural environment. Cactus and succulent mixes are ideal for plants that require well-draining and sandy soil, while rich organic soil suits plants needing more nutrients and moisture retention. Acidic soils (low pH) are needed for plants like azaleas and blueberries, which thrive in "ericaceous" soil mixes. Always check if your plant prefers neutral or alkaline soil, as regular potting soil usually meets this need. Regarding watering, understanding terms like "Keep Soil Moist" versus "Drought Tolerant" can prevent common mistakes such as overwatering or underwatering. Use pots with drainage holes to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Fertilizer advice often includes feeding frequency and type. Heavy feeders require frequent feeding with diluted liquid fertilizers, while light feeders need less frequent fertilization. During peak blooming seasons, switching to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus (such as orchid fertilizer) can enhance flower production. By reading plant labels carefully, like those from stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot, you gain confidence in providing the correct environment tailored to each plant's needs. Combining this knowledge with observing your plant's responses will establish you as a successful plant caretaker, enhancing both your indoor and outdoor garden’s beauty and vitality.
