📚 Book Recommendation: Scythe 🗡️
⭐️Overall rating: /5: 4.5 stars
I really loved this first book and I can’t wait to read the 2nd one in the series! 🥰 As an adult, I was skeptical about starting a young adult series, scared that it might bore me or that I had outgrown potential relatable topics in the book, but I was pleasantly surprised and captivated by the world and stories of these characters we follow throughout the book!
World Vibe:
“Thou shalt kill.
A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.” - Description from GoodReads

Scythe is the first book in Neal Shusterman's Arc of a Scythe trilogy, released in 2017. It explores a fascinating and morally complex world where humanity has eradicated death, leading to an unusual profession that maintains the population known as Scythes. As the architect of this dystopian reality, Shusterman presents readers with pressing themes such as the ethics of life and death, and the political dynamics that arise from such power. The book's main characters grapple with not only their responsibilities as Scythes but also their own beliefs and inherent humanity. Readers are treated to a blend of thrilling plot twists and intricate character development, which prompts them to question their own perspectives on life, death, and morality. This tension creates an engaging reading experience that defies traditional genre boundaries, appealing to both young adult and adult audiences alike. While some readers express a preference for first-person narratives, the third-person perspective in Scythe effectively showcases multiple viewpoints, enriching the story's depth. Although the pacing starts slowly, the intense and unpredictable events that follow maintain reader interest and provoke thoughtful dialogues about ethical dilemmas faced by the characters. Whether you enjoy deep philosophical questions or simply a well-written science fiction story, Scythe promises to satisfy and challenge its readers, making it a must-read for book lovers and a great conversation starter in the book club scene.
