exploding kittens but 1,000x cuter 🌈💕🦄
hey friends!
quick storytime / board game chat
my fiance and i have been doing little Monday night mini dates, and tonight's mini date was learning a new card game together!
he LOVES exploding kittens, and this reminded us both of that game (although, less explosions).
the company's official description says:
Unstable Unicorns is a strategic card game about everyone's two favorite things: Destruction & Unicorns.
The goal of Unstable Unicorns is to be the first person to collect seven Unicorns in your play area, also known as your Stable. Use Magic, Instant, Upgrade, and Downgrade cards to hinder your opponents’ progress and destroy their Unicorns. But beware -- each player has all of these tools at their disposal as well, and you may just find your plans foiled by a well-played “Neigh!” card. Get ready to destroy your friendships...but in a good way.
In 2017, Unstable Unicorns became one of the top 100 most backed Kickstarter projects of all time, and in 2019, the game won the People’s Choice Award for Toy of the Year. We are super proud to have created a game that allows people to share meaningful experiences while actively working to screw each other over.

After our amazing Monday night mini-date playing Unstable Unicorns, I wanted to share a deeper dive into what makes this card game so addictive! If you've been curious about the gameplay or wondering how it stacks up against classics like Exploding Kittens, you're in the right place. The core goal is simple: be the first to gather seven unicorns in your stable. But getting there is where the fun (and chaos!) begins. Each player starts with a Baby Unicorn in their stable and a hand of five cards. On your turn, you draw a card, then you can either play a card from your hand or draw another card. This simple turn structure hides a lot of strategic depth. You'll be playing various card types: Unicorn Cards: These are your main objective! You want to get seven of these into your Stable. They come in different forms, like the adorable 'Baby Unicorn' cards, 'Majestic Flying Unicorn', or even the 'Unicorn Phoenix'. The OCR even showed a 'Swift Flying Unicorn' and an 'Americorn' – so many unique unicorns to collect! Magic Cards: These are one-time effects that can help you or hinder your opponents. Think of them as your special spells! Instant Cards: Can be played at any time, even during another player's turn, to react to situations. Upgrade Cards: Attach to a unicorn in your stable (or an opponent's stable) and provide ongoing positive effects. Cards like 'Good Deal' can really turn the tide. Downgrade Cards: The opposite of upgrades, these attach to an opponent's unicorn, giving them negative effects. This is where a lot of the 'destruction' comes in! I love using cards like 'Glitter Bomb' or 'Glitter Tornado' to mess with my fiancé's plans – it's all in good fun, of course! And then there's the legendary 'Neigh!' card. Oh, the power of a perfectly timed 'Neigh!' This Instant card lets you cancel another player's action. It’s the ultimate defense and offense, often leading to hilarious standoffs where players try to 'Neigh!' each other's 'Neigh!' cards. Learning when to hold onto a 'Neigh!' versus when to use it is a key part of the strategy in Unstable Unicorns gameplay. I've seen entire turns ruined by one well-placed 'Neigh!' card, and it always gets a laugh. Setting up the game is super straightforward. You'll have a main deck, a discard pile, and each player will have their Stable area for their unicorns and any Upgrade/Downgrade cards. The clean layout makes it easy to keep track of everyone's progress on the table. As for strategy, it’s a delicate balance. Do you focus on building your stable quickly, or do you dedicate resources to destroying your opponents' unicorns with cards like 'Narwhal Torpedo' or 'Rainbow Lasso'? I've found that adaptability is key. Sometimes, you need to be aggressive with 'Unicorn Swap' or other destructive cards, and other times, you need to play defensively, especially when someone is close to winning. Many people, myself included, immediately draw parallels between Unstable Unicorns and Exploding Kittens. And for good reason! Both are strategic card games with a quirky art style and a focus on player interaction (often, friendly sabotage). The main similarity is the core mechanic of drawing cards and playing actions, with a crucial 'cancel' card ('Neigh!' vs. 'Defuse'). However, Unstable Unicorns feels a bit 'deeper' in its strategy. While Exploding Kittens is about avoiding an explosion, Unstable Unicorns is about actively building towards a goal while simultaneously dismantling your opponents' progress. The different card types (Upgrade, Downgrade) add layers that aren't present in Exploding Kittens. If you enjoy the lighthearted chaos and back-and-forth of Exploding Kittens but crave a bit more strategic depth and world-building with adorable (and destructive) unicorns, then Unstable Unicorns is definitely worth trying. For us, it’s been a fantastic addition to our game night rotation, even better than we initially expected.
