... Read moreSo, you've seen my 'Risky Business' summer, right? It was truly a whirlwind of unplanned adventures! One thing I kept hearing from friends as I dove into my new passion for pickling and jam-making was, 'Isn't that expensive?' And honestly, they weren't wrong. Those jars, those beautiful, fresh seasonal produce items – they really add up! It felt like I was pouring money into this new hobby. It got me thinking about how easily a seemingly fun, creative pursuit can become a bit of a financial 'risk' if you're not careful, especially when you're managing a household on what often feels like a single income stream from your partner, or just trying to be smart with family finances. When I first started, I just bought everything new. Shiny jars, fancy labels, all the gadgets. Big mistake! I quickly learned that you don't need to break the bank to start a new hobby. For anyone else out there looking to 'pick up a new hobby $$' without the sticker shock, here are a few things I've tried. First, for canning supplies, check out local buy/sell groups or even ask around on social media. So many people have old canning jars sitting in their basements or garages they'd be happy to offload for cheap or even free. I've found some amazing vintage jars this way! Second, for produce, farmers' markets at closing time can offer discounts on bulk purchases, or you can look for 'ugly' produce bins at grocery stores. It tastes the same in jam or pickles! Gardening is my next big project, and that's definitely a long-term strategy for saving on produce costs. It's amazing how a few smart choices can turn an expensive hobby into a sustainable, budget-friendly passion. Speaking of new ventures, you might have spotted my little hint about starting a podcast. 'Start a podcast coming soon'! This is another one of those things that sounds fun and easy, but there's definitely a learning curve and some initial investment, even if it's just time. It's tempting to think of it as a potential 'income stream,' but the reality is, it often starts as a passion project that costs money (equipment, hosting) and a lot of time before it ever generates a dime. For me, it's more about sharing my chaotic, wonderful SAHM life – juggling a spirited four-year-old, managing a new allergy diagnosis that means we now carry an EpiPen everywhere, and somehow finding time to rock climb (yes, even with a recovering back from major surgery – YOLO, right?!). It's all about finding that balance. Being a SAHM, my 'income' is often measured in homemade jams and happy memories, not dollars. But I've learned that even these personal projects require a kind of financial and time budgeting. If you're considering a new hobby or a side hustle, make a mini-plan. Think about the upfront costs, how much time you can realistically dedicate, and what resources you already have. Don’t feel pressured to have it all figured out or to make money from day one. Sometimes, the 'risky business' is just taking that first step to do something new for yourself, managing the unexpected challenges like a sudden allergy scare, or pushing your physical limits after surgery. It’s about enriching your life, and that's a return on investment that money can't buy.
