... Read moreI've often heard people say that if you pluck one white hair, ten more will grow back in its place. From my own experience and research, this is simply not true. Each hair grows from its own follicle, which functions independently and doesn't multiply or produce more hairs as a reaction to plucking. When you notice an increase in white hairs after plucking, it's usually because the graying process is gradual. The pigment-producing cells called melanocytes slow down or stop functioning over time, resulting in new hairs growing in white or gray color. So, those white hairs were likely already forming beneath the surface before you plucked that one out. It's also worth noting that plucking a hair can damage the follicle if done repeatedly over time, which may eventually lead to that follicle no longer producing hair at all — but it won’t cause multiple white hairs to grow back. In my personal journey with aging hair, I've found that embracing the silver strands and understanding the biology behind hair color helps me appreciate the natural changes, rather than fear myths. In essence, the rumor that plucking one white hair causes more to grow is just a hearsay. Taking care of your hair with gentle grooming and knowing the science behind melanocytes can help you manage your hair color changes calmly and wisely.
