... Read moreLiving in a tropical city like Singapore, I’ve often struggled with the dilemma of choosing between fans and air conditioning to keep cool. From my experience, it’s not really about fans vs aircon, but about how to use both efficiently to stay comfortable yet energy-conscious. Fans are incredibly energy-efficient, consuming as little as 50 to 100 watts compared to air conditioners which can use 1,000 to 2,000 watts. This means constantly running fans can dramatically reduce electricity bills and your carbon footprint. Plus, modern fans are much better than the old spinning-blade types — many provide strong airflow and enhanced circulation, making the heat much more bearable. On the other hand, air conditioning cannot be fully dismissed, especially in a humid climate. It’s essential for many to avoid heat-related health issues. However, I’ve learned that small adjustments can make a big difference. For instance, setting the aircon temperature slightly higher, say 25°C instead of 22°C, can reduce energy use by about 10% per degree without sacrificing too much comfort. Also, using the aircon’s built-in fan mode or combining ceiling fans with air conditioning helps circulate the cool air better, so you feel cool at higher temperatures. One habit I picked up is using fans to pre-cool a room before switching on the aircon, then keeping the fan on at a high speed while increasing the room temperature setting on the aircon. This hybrid approach optimizes comfort and energy efficiency simultaneously. It can also extend the lifespan of your air conditioner by reducing its runtime. Environmental impact is another crucial aspect. Air conditioners rely on refrigerants that can trap thousands of times more heat than carbon dioxide if leaked, adding to greenhouse gas accumulation. Using fans more frequently and air conditioners more judiciously helps minimize this risk. In urban planning or new building designs, incorporating natural ventilation and using ceiling fans strategically can significantly reduce dependence on air conditioning. This holistic approach is gaining traction in Singapore and other tropical cities striving to balance comfort with sustainability. So, my takeaway is: embrace a balanced, smarter cooling lifestyle. Fans and air conditioners are not enemies but complementary tools. By using them thoughtfully and upgrading to energy-efficient models, we can all contribute to environmental conservation while beating the tropical heat comfortably.

I don't use Aircon, I use dehumidifier (it does get warmer on some days) plus turn up fan if it's too warm

Aircon Plan for a 4 Room BTO - NO REGRETS!
➡️ Living room (plus 1 hacked bedroom): We decided to go for a stronger 24K BTU aircon, running on its own System 1 compressor (24K BTU), as this has to cover a large area. We also didn't want to combine this with other aircon on 1 compressor so that the compressor would be "dedicated"

we spent ~$89k on our renovation 🏡💰✨
when we started renovating our 4 room BTO, we budgeted around $40–60k for our ID, but didn’t realise how much everything else would add up — from appliances to furniture, electrical works and aircon 🫠 decided to share our total renovation cost (not just ID cost), to hopefully help other new homeown

why 5 aircons for a 4-room BTO?!
sounds a little extra, but with our open-concept layout (dining, kitchen, service yard + walkways all linked), it’s been a lifesaver. • 2 main units cool the home way faster — perfect when guests are over • box-up keeps trunking neat (no random pipes across the walls!) • went with our dad’s fr

MY AIRCON INSTALLATION NIGHTMARE!
Just because an aircon installer is all over your social feed doesn’t mean they’ll do a proper job… here’s my experience. I found this aircon installer through their TikTok videos, as they are very active online, and I decided to engage them after seeing their content. The initial part of the
