... Read moreLiving in Singapore during an El Niño event truly feels like being inside a living sauna, especially with the island's natural high humidity. From my own experience, the shift in weather patterns is quite noticeable. The weakening or reversal of winds that normally bring warm water to our region means less cloud formation and rain, leading to prolonged dry spells. As a result, temperatures soar unusually high, and the usual relief from rain disappears. What makes this season particularly challenging is that climate change is intensifying the strength and unpredictability of El Niño effects. This means that the heatwaves are not only hotter but also last longer than in past years. It's not just an inconvenience; it has real impacts on our health, energy consumption, and the natural environment. For instance, higher temperatures combined with decreased rainfall can stress Singapore’s green spaces and urban infrastructure. People tend to rely more on air conditioning, increasing energy demand and contributing to a cycle of warming. During these periods, it’s crucial to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak heat, and support community efforts to plant trees and create shaded areas. Understanding the El Niño phenomenon helps us prepare better. By acknowledging how the shifting Pacific Ocean patterns affect our weather, we can adapt our daily habits and policies to cope more effectively with the heat. While we can’t control the global climate systems, being aware of these changes empowers us to mitigate their impact on ourselves and our environment.
