When I first learned to type, it seemed odd that the keyboard wasn’t alphabetically arranged, but learning about the mechanical limitations of typewriters explains a lot. The metal typebars of early typewriters would jam if commonly used keys were placed too close. Christopher Latham Sholes addressed this issue by reorganizing the keys in the QWERTY layout to minimize jams. What’s surprising is that even after typewriters became obsolete and computers took over, the QWERTY layout remained the standard. This decision was largely due to user familiarity. Millions had already mastered QWERTY, and switching to more efficient layouts like Dvorak was challenging because of the learning curve. I tried switching to the Dvorak layout out of curiosity, which promised better ergonomics and speed. However, the inertia of widespread QWERTY use—especially with shared computers and software configured for QWERTY—made it impractical long term. This reflects the broader principle in design and technology: sometimes the "best" solution doesn’t win because the most familiar one has the advantage. Knowing this history also makes me appreciate how design decisions extend beyond pure functionality to include usability, user habits, and cultural momentum. So next time you type, remember there's a story behind those seemingly random letters at the top left of your keyboard!
