Time To Plant The Yardlong Beans!

(Full video linked below!) Well it's time to plant the Yardlong beans! With the heat and humidity in full swing, the tomatoes that are planted in full sun are no longer pollinating themselves or making baby tomatoes. So, out with the old and in with the new! We saved these Yardong beans from last year's crop, and even though they look so small, they will yield pounds and pounds of tasty foot long (or longer!) green beans, all throughout our summer!

Full Youtube Video: https://youtu.be/7XQjj0UZdlY

... Read morePlanting yardlong beans can be a rewarding experience, especially during the warmer months when many other crops like tomatoes struggle with pollination due to heat and humidity. From my own gardening, I've found that starting yardlong beans from saved seeds each year is not only economical but also ensures reliable, robust plants that can produce an impressive yield. One helpful tip is considering the placement of your yardlong bean plants. While they thrive in full sun, high temperatures can sometimes stress them. In fact, experimenting with planting some beans in parts of the garden that receive partial shade can help protect them from intense afternoon sun, which might improve overall health and productivity. Using a shade cloth can provide extra protection, though I understand that not everyone has the time to set that up. Yardlong beans take climbing support, so providing trellises or poles for them to grow upward helps maximize space and air circulation, reducing disease risk and making harvest easier. These beans can grow quite long—often over a foot—so regular harvesting encourages continuous production throughout the summer. In my experience, maintaining consistent watering, especially in dry spells, coupled with fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost, results in the best bean crops. Don't hesitate to keep an eye on pests like aphids or spider mites, which can occasionally affect these beans. Organic pest control methods such as neem oil or insecticidal soap work great. Finally, if you enjoy sharing your gardening journey, recording videos or photos as the beans grow can be rewarding and helpful for the gardening community online. Channels like the one linked in the original article provide excellent inspiration and practical guidance for novice and experienced gardeners alike.
