Day in the life of a flight attendant on standby

It's truly a unique part of our schedule, and often, it's a mystery even to us! For starters, 'standby' means you're on call, ready to jump into action if another crew member calls in sick, a flight needs an extra hand, or there are unexpected schedule changes. There are generally two types: airport standby and home standby. Airport standby means you're literally at the airport, usually in the crew room, waiting for an assignment. You're dressed, bags packed, and within minutes of being able to board a flight. Home standby, which is what I often experience, means you're at home, but you have to be ready to get to the airport within a very short timeframe — usually 1-2 hours from the moment you get *the call*. My daily routine on a standby day can be quite structured, despite the uncertainty. I treat it like a normal work day. I wake up, get ready, and ensure my uniform is pressed and ready to go. My flight bag, affectionately known as my 'go-bag,' is always packed with essentials: passport, uniform shoes, snacks, a book, and toiletries. You never know if you'll be flying for an hour or an international trip! The hardest part is staying alert and ready. You can't make plans, because at any moment, your phone could ring. It's a constant mental game of preparation and patience. When that call comes, it's usually sudden. Your heart races a little because it could be anything – a short domestic turnaround or a flight across the globe! You confirm the details, grab your bag, and rush out the door. This 'behind the scenes' rush is something passengers rarely see. We might have just finished breakfast, or been in the middle of a workout, but duty calls! The adrenaline kicks in, and you transition from relaxed home life to professional cabin crew mode in minutes. The biggest challenge? The unpredictability. One day you might end up flying to a destination you've always wanted to see; the next, you might sit at home all day only to be released in the evening. It truly teaches you to embrace vulnerability and go with the flow. It affects personal plans, social life, and even sleep patterns. You learn to be incredibly flexible, and to find ways to relax and recharge when you can, knowing that a trip could be around the corner. Despite the challenges, there's a certain thrill to it. Sometimes, these last-minute assignments lead to incredible experiences or a chance to fly with a new crew. It's a testament to the resilience required in this job. So, next time you see a flight attendant, remember that for many of us, getting to that flight involved a lot of 'what ifs' and quick thinking, especially on a today's standby schedule.
