... Read moreHey everyone! I've been on a journey to grow my natural hair for years, and I'm so excited to share what really works for me. It's not just about using the right products; it's a holistic approach that truly makes a difference in achieving healthy, long natural hair.
First up, let's talk about Protective Styles. These are absolute game-changers for retaining length and preventing breakage. I rotate through various styles like classic braids and twists, but I also love trying out elegant braided buns or even simple high buns that tuck away my ends. Wigs are also fantastic for giving your hair a break from daily manipulation. The key is to make sure your protective style isn't too tight, which can cause tension and damage. I usually keep mine in for 2-4 weeks, making sure to moisturize my scalp and hair underneath regularly. When I take them down, I always do it gently, finger-detangling first to avoid pulling out precious strands.
Next, a solid product regimen is non-negotiable. For SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER, I always opt for sulfate-free and deeply moisturizing formulas. Harsh sulfates can strip natural hair of its essential oils, leading to dryness and breakage. I often pre-poo with an oil before washing to add an extra layer of protection. After shampooing, a rich conditioner is crucial for detangling and softening. Sometimes, I even co-wash (conditioner-only wash) between full washes to refresh my curls without over-stripping them.
MOISTURE is literally the lifeblood of natural hair, especially for those of us with high porosity hair where moisture can escape easily. My routine always includes a good leave-in conditioner, followed by a cream or butter, and then sealing with an oil (the LOC method: Liquid, Oil, Cream). This layering helps lock in hydration. I make sure to moisturize my hair daily, or every other day, focusing on my ends which are the oldest and most fragile part of my hair.
Speaking of OILS, they are incredible for scalp health and sealing. I love using lighter oils like jojoba or almond for scalp massages to stimulate growth, and thicker oils like castor or olive for sealing my ends. Hot oil treatments once a month have also made a huge difference in strengthening my strands and adding a beautiful shine. Just warm the oil gently, apply it to your hair, cover with a cap, and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.
Finally, DETANGLING correctly is paramount to avoiding breakage. I always detangle my hair when it's damp and saturated with conditioner, starting from the ends and working my way up to the roots. Using a wide-tooth comb or a dedicated detangling brush makes this process much smoother and minimizes hair loss. Patience is key here – never force a comb through knots!
Beyond products, remember that healthy hair starts from within. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and reducing stress all contribute to overall hair health and growth. Regular trims (every 3-4 months) to snip off split ends are also vital, as they prevent splits from traveling up the hair shaft and causing more damage.
Growing natural hair is a journey, not a race. Be patient, be consistent, and most importantly, love your hair through every stage!
Those aren’t rlly protective styles…for protective styling try braids and cornrows or even wigs 🤷♀️
