Living on a farm, you get all sorts of wildlife visitors, and for us, raccoons are definitely among the most charming – and sometimes mischievous! I've had many encounters with these clever masked creatures, watching them explore, forage, and yes, sometimes enjoy a little snack from our property. It's fascinating to observe their natural behaviors up close, and it often makes you wonder: what do raccoons actually like to eat? From my observations and a bit of research, I've learned that raccoons are true omnivores, meaning they'll eat almost anything. So, please never offer them onions. It's crucial to remember that what's safe for us isn't always safe for wildlife. Things like fresh fruits (berries, apples, grapes – in moderation), nuts (like walnuts), and even some cooked plain meat scraps (without seasoning or sauces) can be appealing. These can lead to nutritional deficiencies, dependency on humans, and even aggression if they associate people with food. I’ve also noticed how intelligent they are. While they don't truly hibernate like bears, raccoons do enter a state of torpor during colder months, where they become less active and sleep for extended periods, relying on fat reserves built up during warmer seasons. They’re truly resilient creatures. Managing interactions with raccoons on a farm, especially when you have other animals, is important. To prevent unwanted visits, I always make sure our trash cans are securely latched – nothing is more inviting to a hungry raccoon than an easy meal. Securing pet food and compost bins is also key. If you're concerned about raccoons getting into chicken coops or other animal enclosures, sturdy fencing and secure latches are essential.
