Otaru’s reputation as the city of glass makes it a standout destination for anyone interested in artisan handmade jewelry and ornaments. The glass earrings shaped like snowflakes, lemons, and chestnuts are not only visually appealing but also feature a captivating color-changing effect under different lightings. These make perfect, meaningful souvenirs or gifts. Beyond earrings, the glass craft industry there offers beautiful vases, figurines, and decorative items that can add a touch of Hokkaido’s artistry to your home.
In Sapporo, the shopping vibe shifts towards premium outlet malls featuring global brands like Beams, Nike, Adidas, and New Balance. This makes Sapporo a great spot for fashion enthusiasts seeking branded apparel at reasonable prices—like men’s shirts at SGD80 for two. The Tanukikoji shopping street, a bustling local market, provides a different experience with its variety of drugstores and smaller shops. It’s a good place to pick up everyday essentials or explore Japanese skincare and health products.
For fans of pop culture, Sapporo’s Pokemon Center and Disney shops offer exclusive merchandise and collectibles. If you’re passing through Narita airport, don’t miss the chance to purchase luxury beauty items like Refa hair spray and Dior lip balm for your travel kit or as gifts.
No shopping haul in Hokkaido is complete without indulging in local food specialties. Shiroi Koibito, the famous white chocolate cookie, is a must-have souvenir. The limited-edition 30th anniversary box from the park offers an extra special treat. Rokkatei’s Marusei butter sandwiches are a delightful indulgence, though it’s wise to buy them close to your last day to ensure freshness. LeTao’s Darjeeling tea chocolate stands out as a top favorite, alongside the creamy Fromage cheesecake. For those who enjoy cooking, purchasing dried seaweed shrimp from Nishio market is a unique souvenir that adds authentic flavor to Japanese miso soup.
When shopping in Hokkaido, remember to plan according to your itinerary and luggage capacity, especially as some food products require refrigeration or have short shelf lives. Combining artisan crafts with delicious local delicacies and branded fashion, your Hokkaido shopping haul will offer a well-rounded experience showcasing the best of northern Japan’s culture and style.
