... Read moreHeading to Denver is always an adventure, and ensuring you have the right gear can make all the difference! I’m so excited about our upcoming trip, and getting our bags ready for Preston and me has been a fun challenge, especially with Denver's famously unpredictable weather. It's not just about what to pack, but how to pack smart for comfort and practicality in the Mile-High City.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned about packing for Denver is the importance of layers. The weather can change dramatically from morning to afternoon, and even from sun to shade. You might start your day with crisp, cool air, be basking in warm sunshine by midday, and then face a sudden afternoon shower or a chilly evening. Having versatile pieces you can easily add or remove is key to staying comfortable.
Here’s a breakdown of what made it into our bags, keeping both style and function in mind for a Denver adventure:
1. Versatile Clothing Pieces:
Tops: Think short-sleeved tees for warmer moments and long-sleeved shirts for layering. For Preston, I made sure to include his favorite light brown t-shirt featuring that cool blue pickup truck graphic – it’s perfect for a casual day out exploring! I always pack a mix of breathable fabrics that can handle changes in activity levels.
Warmer Layers: A couple of cozy sweaters or hoodies are non-negotiable. A fleece jacket or a light insulated vest is also great for adding warmth without bulk.
Outerwear: A water-resistant and windproof jacket is essential, even if the forecast looks clear. Denver can have unexpected rain or even snow, depending on the season. A packable down jacket is another smart choice for colder trips.
Bottoms: Comfortable jeans are always a winner for Denver. I also packed some versatile athletic pants or leggings for myself, suitable for hiking or just lounging. For Preston, along with his favorite t-shirt, I included several pairs of light-colored shorts, ideal for warmer afternoons, and some durable pants for cooler evenings or active play.
Sleepwear: Don't forget comfortable PJs!
2. Footwear for Exploring:
Denver is a city for walking and outdoor activities.
Comfortable Walking Shoes/Sneakers: This is probably the most important item. You'll be doing a lot of exploring, whether it's downtown or in the parks.
Hiking Boots (Optional but Recommended): If you plan on hitting any trails in the nearby mountains, a good pair of broken-in hiking boots will be your best friend.
Casual Shoes: Something a bit nicer for evenings out, if that's on your agenda.
3. Essential Accessories & Health:
Sun Protection: At Denver's altitude, the sun is much stronger. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are absolute must-haves. Don't forget lip balm with SPF too!
Hydration: The dry air and altitude can lead to dehydration. A reusable water bottle is crucial.
Small Backpack: Handy for day trips, carrying layers, snacks, and your water bottle.
Basic First Aid Kit: Blister bandages, pain relievers, and any personal medications. Consider bringing altitude sickness medication if you're prone to it, or consult your doctor.
Chargers & Portable Power Bank: Keep your devices ready for capturing all those scenic views.
4. Special Considerations for Kids (like Preston!):
When packing for a little one, always throw in a few extra outfits – spills and unexpected messes are part of the fun! Comfort is paramount, so soft, durable fabrics are best. I also make sure to pack some small toys or books for downtime, especially for travel days.
Packing for Denver doesn't have to be overwhelming. By focusing on layers, comfort, and preparedness for the elements, you'll be ready to enjoy everything this vibrant city has to offer. I can't wait to share more from our trip!
