we have potatoes!

We have potatoes. I finished our potato planter today, and the wife got soil so that i could transfer the potato plants.

I used cardboard to cover all cracks in all the raised beds while also keeping drainage available.

To start, it’s essential to select the right variety of potatoes that suit your climate and space. Popular choices like Yukon Gold are known for their creamy texture and excellent taste, making them a favorite among home gardeners. Proper preparation of the soil is crucial. Potatoes thrive in loose, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Adding compost not only improves soil texture but provides essential nutrients for healthy plant growth. It's also beneficial to avoid planting potatoes in areas where other solanaceous crops, like tomatoes and peppers, have grown recently to minimize disease risk. When planting, consider spacing your potato seeds adequately — around 12 inches apart and about 4 inches deep. Hill the plants as they grow by piling more soil around the base. This technique enhances tuber development and helps prevent greening of the potatoes, which can occur when they are exposed to sunlight. For optimal growth, ensure that your potato plants receive a consistent amount of moisture throughout the growing season. Drip irrigation systems are ideal for maintaining moisture levels without the risks of overwatering. Finally, watch out for pests and diseases, such as the Colorado potato beetle and blight. Cultivating companion plants like marigolds can deter pests naturally, while regular inspections of the plants can help catch issues early. Harvesting should occur after the foliage has died back, ensuring that the potatoes have reached their maximum size and developed the best flavor. By following these guidelines, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of fresh potatoes that will elevate your meals and provide you with a satisfying gardening experience.
