Left Over Chili
Last night i made a big batch of chili, and usually the leftovers dont always end up getting eaten. Now this has been not so big a deal as we started composting and we got the chickens.
In an effort to continue self sustainability and reduce waste, the kids are eating leftovers for supper. I packaged up the remaining leftovers, and this will be good in the freezer for about 6 months. IF it doesnt get eaten within that time it will be added to the compost to make soil.
I paid about $50 for a box of different size bags. They have packaged up so much and im just now starting to run out. I need to start tracking my #'s
(Correction, chili with noodles stores for about 3 months not 6)

Storing and preserving leftover chili properly can significantly extend its shelf life and help reduce food waste at home. Freezing chili is one of the best preservation methods, and using high-quality food storage bags, such as those from FoodSaver, helps prevent freezer burn and maintain flavor. Typically, plain leftover chili can be frozen for up to 6 months, while chili with added noodles is best consumed within 3 months for optimal taste and texture. To maximize freshness, let the chili cool completely before packaging it into airtight freezer bags or containers. Removing as much air as possible is key to preventing freezer burn and preserving the quality of your meal. Labeling your packages with the date frozen will help you keep track of storage times and reduce waste further. If leftovers do not get eaten within the recommended freezing period, composting is an excellent alternative to minimize environmental impact. Composting leftover chili and other food scraps enriches soil naturally, supporting gardening and homesteading efforts. Additionally, involving children in eating leftovers helps instill sustainable habits and reduces the chances of food waste. Investing in a variety of freezer bags and organizing meals can improve meal planning efficiency. Tracking the number of food packages used and consumed may provide insights into consumption patterns and help optimize food storage needs. By combining freezing, composting, and mindful consumption, families can embrace sustainability, save money, and contribute positively to environmental conservation.
