After my amazing Easter weekend day trip to Oglebay Park, I just had to share more about why this spot is an absolute gem in West Virginia! When we set out for our 6-mile hike, I was so excited to dive deeper into nature, and Oglebay truly delivered. For anyone looking to get into hiking, or even seasoned trekkers, the variety of trails here is fantastic. We found paths ranging from gentle, level trails perfect for a leisurely stroll, to more challenging routes that really get your heart pumping. It's incredible how many different landscapes you can experience within one park! Beyond the invigorating hikes, one of the highlights has to be the stunning Oglebay Gardens. We spent some time wandering through them, and it felt like stepping into a peaceful, vibrant painting. The Joseph F. Bissonnette Gardens were particularly breathtaking, with beds bursting with color—I especially loved seeing all the Pink Tulips in bloom during our spring visit. It’s not just a feast for the eyes; it’s a serene place for reflection, perfectly embodying the natural beauty that West Virginia is famous for. You might even stumble upon little surprises, like that beautiful cross carved into a tree stump we saw, reminding you that GOD IS EVERYWHERE!! in such a serene environment. While our trip focused on hiking and the gardens, Oglebay offers so much more, making it a perfect destination for all kinds of visitors. If you're wondering about other things to do in Oglebay, there's the Good Zoo, which is a fantastic option for families. And if you plan a winter visit, the Festival of Lights is absolutely magical – definitely something I want to experience next! The park also features a lovely lake complete with ducks and a fountain, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. Before heading out, make sure to stop by the gift shop and welcome center near the parking area – it's a great spot to pick up a souvenir or grab a map for your next adventure. Oglebay is truly a standout among places to visit in West Virginia, whether you're a nature enthusiast, a couple seeking a romantic escape, or just looking for a free, fun day out. It’s easy to see why it's a key part of WV tourism. The fact that you can enjoy so much natural beauty and well-maintained facilities without an entrance fee makes it incredibly accessible. Our day trip from Wheeling was so refreshing, and it really felt like a genuine escape. I'd wholeheartedly recommend putting Oglebay Park on your list for your next adventure – you won't be disappointed by the trails, the gardens, or the overall peaceful atmosphere!
