Gladiolus Glow-Up: Year 1 → Year 3 Showstoppers 🌸✨
Swipe to see how my gladiolus went from the biggest pains to plant to my absolute FAVORITE garden stars
Year 1: Nervous newbie planting bulbs, praying for anything — I was GIDDY that they bloomed the first year!
Year 2: A few new self seeded spikes – honestly was happier to discover that I got more flowers without having to plant more bulbs myself (literally loathe bulb planting)
Year 3: Tall, colorful, and making me look like I know what I’m doing 😂
Biggest lesson? These beauties just keep getting better with time and better soil.

Growing gladiolus has truly been a rewarding experience for me. When I first started, I found planting the bulbs quite challenging and honestly dreaded the whole process. However, seeing even a single bloom in the first year gave me so much excitement and motivation to continue. One thing I learned early on is that gladiolus thrives better with well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Improving my garden bed's soil quality each year made a noticeable difference. By the second year, I was pleasantly surprised to find new spikes self-seeding without any extra effort. This meant the bulbs were establishing themselves well, and I didn’t have to keep planting new ones to get more flowers. It’s a real game-changer when your garden starts to take care of itself, isn’t it? Additionally, staking the tall flower spikes helped prevent them from bending or breaking in windy weather, which kept the flower display neat and beautiful. In my third year, my gladiolus plants stood tall and colorful, truly becoming the stars of my garden. The key takeaway is that patience and consistent care pay off. I recommend fellow gardeners to not give up after the initial year, as these beauties only improve over time. Also, experimenting with different gladiolus varieties can offer a stunning range of colors and bloom times. Have you noticed similar flower glow-ups in your garden? Share your story!
