Unpopular opinion, skincare edition!

✨ Why Your Makeup Isn’t Enough to Skip SPF ✨

Relying on your makeup for sun protection might seem like a time-saver, but here’s the truth: there’s simply not enough sunscreen in your makeup to adequately shield your skin.

Most makeup products with SPF contain lower protection levels (like SPF 15 or 20), and even if they’re labeled higher, you’d have to apply an excessive amount of product to match the recommended amount of sunscreen for proper coverage.

☀️ Here’s why a dedicated SPF is essential:

1️⃣ Complete Coverage: SPF needs to be applied evenly and generously to cover every exposed area of your skin. This can’t be achieved with a thin layer of makeup.

2️⃣ Reapplication is Key: Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every 2 hours, especially if you’re outdoors. Most of us don’t reapply makeup that frequently.

3️⃣ Broad Spectrum Protection: Not all makeup provides broad-spectrum coverage, which protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

Bottom Line: Your makeup is a great addition to your routine, but it’s not a replacement for a good, dedicated SPF. Start your skincare routine with sunscreen, and let your makeup do the rest!

... Read moreIn today's skincare landscape, the importance of SPF cannot be overstated. Many makeup products tout SPF benefits, but the reality is that these levels are often too low to provide effective protection. Even popular foundations or tinted moisturizers, though appealing, fail to deliver the sufficient quantity of sunscreen required for genuine sun safety. According to dermatologists, a full face of makeup may not equate to a full application of sunscreen, which requires a substantial amount to truly safeguard the skin. This is crucial for anyone who spends considerable time outdoors, as repeated exposure can lead to premature aging and skin cancer. To strike a balance between makeup and skincare, it's vital to implement a two-step routine: apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen first, followed by makeup. Look for sunscreens that offer at least SPF 30 for optimal protection, and ensure they are labeled as 'broad-spectrum,' denoting their efficacy against both UVA/UVB rays. Moreover, remember to reapply every two hours, particularly if you’re perspiring or in direct sunlight. Additionally, some brands are now producing makeup with higher SPF content, so opt for those when possible, but do not rely on them as your primary defense against the sun. Incorporating SPF into daily routines can significantly alter skin health over time. With increasing awareness regarding sun protection, understanding how to harness both skincare and makeup products effectively allows you to protect your skin while still showcasing a beautiful, glowing complexion.
