When diving deeper into art fundamentals, especially around lighting and shading as highlighted in Day 2 of this sketch practice, I found that understanding the laws of light can make a significant difference in how realistic your sketches appear. For example, incident light—the light directly hitting your subject—is crucial in defining highlights and overall form. Core shadows act as the transitional zone between light and dark on curved surfaces, which gives your drawing depth, making objects look three-dimensional rather than flat. On the other hand, cast shadows, which are shadows that objects cast onto other surfaces, help anchor your subjects in space and create a sense of realism. From my experience practicing daily sketch studies, using a smaller light source like a lamp produces sharp, defined cast shadows, while a broader light source such as a softbox creates softer, more diffused shadows that blend gently. This softness can guide you in varying your shading technique depending on the mood or style you want to convey. Furthermore, observing the angle of the light source and how it interacts with your subject always helped me decide where the highlights should be placed and how to transition smoothly into the shadows. For beginners and even intermediate artists, these principles might seem subtle but mastering them enhances your sketches tremendously. Integrating these lighting concepts into regular sketchbook practice not only builds technical skills but also trains your eye to see objects in light and shadow more clearly, making your artworks more vivid and lifelike.
