Auto Insurance Tips

Here’s some tips to take from an auto adjuster!:

- Make sure you know and understand your policy and coverages!

- We aren’t trying to NOT cover something, if something isn’t covered, it’s because it’s EXCLUDED in your policy that YOU signed!

- There is no such thing as “full coverage”

- If you are going to take rental coverage, make sure it’s enough to cover the size rental you want, you will pay out of pocket for anything over your daily rate! $20 a day will not cover your rental!

- After an accident, take photos! Scene photos and damage of both vehicles!

- Get the other drivers insurance always! If they don’t want to give it, take note of their license plate number!

- GET A DASHCAM! People lie about how accidents happen!

- Call the police! Or file a report online, always!

- Your deductible will always apply, even if you are not at fault! (Your deductible COULD be waived if the other insurance accepts liability)

- Make sure your liability limits are high enough!

- Make sure anyone driving your vehicle, who lives with you, is on your policy! If someone else is driving your vehicle and gets in an accident and is not on your policy, underwriting will be notified and you’ll have to add them anyways!

- Just tell the truth and be honest with your adjuster! They are on your side!

... Read moreIt's easy to feel overwhelmed by car insurance, isn't it? We all want to protect ourselves and our vehicles, but understanding the jargon and making the right choices can feel like navigating a maze. While the initial tips from an adjuster are golden, let's dive a little deeper into some of the nuances that can truly make a difference in your experience and your wallet. One of the biggest eye-openers for me was realizing there's no magic 'full coverage' button. When people ask for 'full coverage,' they usually mean a combination of different policies. For instance, liability insurance is what protects you if you're at fault in an accident and cause damage or injury to others. It's legally required almost everywhere. Then there's collision coverage, which pays to repair your own car if you hit another vehicle or object. And don't forget comprehensive coverage, which handles everything else – think theft, vandalism, fire, or hitting a deer. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for tailoring your policy to your actual needs and avoiding unexpected financial considerations. Shopping for car insurance isn't a one-and-done deal. Your life changes, and so should your policy! I’ve learned that it pays to shop around every year or two. Don't just auto-renew without checking what other providers offer. Get multiple quotes and compare not just the price, but also the coverage limits and deductibles. Factors like your driving record, the type of vehicle you drive, and even your credit score can significantly impact your premiums. Always ask about potential discounts too – multi-car, good student, safe driver, or even bundling with home insurance can save you a pretty penny. It’s all part of managing the overall financial aspects of owning a car. After an accident, beyond taking photos and exchanging info, what happens next? This is where your interaction with the adjuster really kicks in. Remember that honesty is key; they're there to help process your claim according to your policy. Be prepared to provide detailed information about the incident. Also, if your car needs repairs, understand your options. Do you have a preferred shop, or will your insurance company recommend one? Knowing your deductible amount beforehand means you won't be surprised when it’s time to pay your portion of the repair costs. Sometimes, the other insurance company might accept liability, which could waive your deductible – but that’s not always a guarantee and can take time to sort out. Finally, treat your car insurance policy as a living document. Life events like getting married, moving, buying a new car, or even your kids starting to drive mean it’s time to review your coverage. Don't wait for an accident to find out you're underinsured or paying for coverage you no longer need. A quick call to your agent once a year can ensure your policy remains aligned with your current situation, giving you peace of mind and smart financial aspects management. It really makes a difference to be proactive!
