Spend a Day in Hawaii Volcano National Park

Hawaii Volcano National Park is must do when visiting the Big Island. At the park you can see Kilauea, the most active volcano in Hawaii. The volcano is creating new land on the Big Island. Currently the island is growing 42 acres a year. There are activities for all ages at this park. Here are my recommendations for a day at the park.

Start the day by visiting the overlooks, Uekahuna, Kilauea Overlook, and Steam Vents. Each has a parking lot. You can look into the crater caused by the volcano. It’s common to see steam coming up from the crater. These are also where you’ll want to go if the volcano is erupting. They allow for amazing views of the eruption.

Next head over to Kilauea Iki Overlook. You can checkout the overlook and walk over to Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube). The lava tube is awesome! It’s created by the outer layer of lava cooling while the inner layer drains out. The tube is lit, so it’s easy to go through.

Next hike the Kilauea Iki Trail. You can walk to it from both the lava tube and the Kilauea Iki Overlook. The trail takes you through the jungle and down into a lava field. You can hike the whole trail, which is a loop, or just do the first section down the the lava field and back. It only took us about an hour to walk down to the lava field and back.

Lastly, end your day by driving down the Chain of Craters Road. There are many stops you can do along the way. We stopped at a few. At most stops you can see different lava fields created by eruptions. The end of the road takes you to Holei Sea Arch. The whole drive is scenic as you descend from the mountains to the ocean.

Hawaii Volcano National Park is a must visit when going to the Big Island. For most, one day is sufficient. If you really love hiking, you may want to consider multiple days, as there are many hikes you can do at the park. When visiting, make sure to stop at the visitor center to get the most up-to-date information about the volcano. The volcano is active and the landscape is constantly changing.
