Must Visit Beaches in Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii has so many beautiful beaches. Here are a few of my favorites.

💙 Green Sand Beach - This beach is one of the few green sand beaches in the world. It really looks green too! There are two ways to get to the beach. You can either hike to the beach or take an off-road adventure out there. A local family runs a business where they will take you out there for $20 per person round trip. The hike out there is pretty long and hot, so we opted for the ride. It was a pretty fun and adventurous ride, so I think it was well worth the $20. The guy gave us plenty of time at the beach as well.

💙 Waikoloa Beach - This beach is near many of the large resorts on the Big Island. At this beach, the sand is soft, white sand. The water is generally calm and can be a great place to snorkel. It’s great for both relaxing and swimming.

💙 Carlsmith Beach Park - This beach is located on the Hilo side of the island. It’s a naturally protected lagoon. It’s great for snorkeling as it’s rocky and many fish like to hang out by the rocks. It’s also well-protected, so it’s fairly relaxing swimming spot. There are some cold spots here as fresh underground spring water leaks into the lagoon, but overall the water is fairly comfortable.

💙 Pololū Beach - Located on the north shore, this beach is stunning. Here you will find black sand that is super fine and soft. The beach is also surrounded by beautiful, lush mountains. There is a bit of a hike down, but it’s worth it. It’s advised to not swim at this beach as the tides are quite strong.

This spot is a snorkeler’s delight, as the rocky nooks provide shelter for diverse fish species. Some areas feel cooler due to underground springs, which can be refreshing on hot days, but swimmers might want to be prepared for varying water temperatures. Pololū Beach, on the north shore, captivates visitors with its fine, soft black sand and towering lush mountains in the backdrop. This beach requires a hike down a steep trail, so good footwear and some physical readiness are necessary. Due to strong currents and tides, swimming is discouraged here. However, Pololū is a fantastic place for photography, picnics, and appreciating untouched natural beauty. When visiting any of these beaches, always respect local wildlife and environmental rules designed to preserve these natural wonders. Carry out all trash, avoid touching fragile coral, and be mindful of ocean conditions for your safety. These practices ensure that the beaches remain pristine and enjoyable for future visitors.
