Moving Up at Target: How I’m Growing my Career 🎯💼

One of the coolest things about working at Target is how many ways you can grow your career. Moving up doesn’t just mean becoming a Team Lead — there are so many options depending on your goals:

💪 Team Lead (TL) — Lead a team, manage shifts, and develop leadership skills on the floor

📈 Executive Team Lead (ETL) — Take on bigger responsibilities, oversee multiple areas, and help shape store operations

🏢 Store Director — Lead the entire store, mentor leaders, and set strategy for your team

💻 Corporate Roles — Work in areas like marketing, HR, analytics, or operations, sometimes even from home

The first step to moving up in a store is getting cross-trained and learning different parts of the store. The biggest key? LET your Team Lead, ETL, and Store Director know you’re interested! If they don’t know, it’s hard for them to “develop” you — which is Target’s way of putting you on the path to a leadership role.

Target really makes it clear: your career, your path, your growth. Store experience gives you a huge advantage no matter which route you take!

... Read moreThinking about your next career step at Target? It’s awesome that you're looking to grow! While the original article touched on the different paths available, I wanted to dive deeper into how you can truly prepare yourself for those exciting leadership roles, whether it's becoming a Team Lead, an ETL, or even heading towards a Corporate position. It's not just about expressing interest; it's about actively demonstrating your readiness. From my experience, one of the first and most impactful things you can do is to truly embrace cross-training. It’s more than just learning another department; it's about understanding the entire store's operation. For instance, if you've primarily worked in apparel, try to get shifts in General Merchandise, learning about different product categories like body lotion or cosmetic products. Understanding how these diverse departments function – from stocking and inventory to guest service challenges – gives you a holistic view of the business. The more versatile you are, the more valuable you become, and the better you can lead teams across different areas. Don't just passively learn; ask questions, take notes, and try to identify inefficiencies or areas for improvement in those new departments. Beyond just learning new tasks, focus on developing critical leadership skills in your current role. Are you a good communicator? Can you delegate effectively? Do you take initiative to solve problems before they escalate? These are the qualities that your leaders are looking for. For example, if you see a new team member struggling, proactively offer to mentor them. If there's a recurring issue, propose a solution to your Team Lead instead of just reporting the problem. Show that you can think strategically and act proactively. A key strategy I've found incredibly useful is proactive engagement and seeking feedback. Don't wait for your annual review. Schedule regular check-ins with your Team Lead or ETL specifically to discuss your career aspirations. Ask them, "What specific skills or experiences do you think I need to develop to be ready for an ETL role?" Or, "Are there any projects or responsibilities I could take on to demonstrate my leadership potential?" Some of my colleagues have even asked to shadow an ETL for a few hours to get a real-world perspective of their daily challenges and responsibilities. This shows immense initiative and a genuine desire to learn. Also, if Target has a formal "Prepare for Next" program or similar leadership development initiatives, make it your mission to understand how to get into them. Talk to leaders who have gone through these programs. What were their biggest takeaways? What did they do to prepare their applications and interviews? Often, these programs are designed to fast-track high-potential team members, and knowing the entry requirements and expectations is half the battle. Remember that image we see, reminding us of the "Ways to 'Move up'"? These programs are often a structured way to do just that. Keeping a journal of your achievements, challenges you've overcome, and positive guest interactions can also be a powerful tool when you're ready to make your case for advancement. Good luck on your journey!
