What I Saw About Theft at Target 👀🎯(Employee POV)
Working at Target, I’ve seen a lot… but nothing surprised me more than learning how our AP (Asset Protection) team actually works behind the scenes.
They let us sit in one day and showed how they monitor everything — the zoom, the clarity, the number of cameras?! CRAZY. It’s honestly hard not to get caught. 😳
The first time I saw someone actually get caught stealing, my heart was racing. I’ve even reported a few incidents myself — I felt bad, but if you make it that obvious, I have to.
🎯 Career takeaway: Seeing behind the scenes gave me a whole new appreciation for how much teamwork and precision it takes to keep a store running safely.
💬 Have you ever seen theft at your job? What did you do? Do you think retail workers should step in — or stay out of it?

Walking through the aisles at Target, picking up some new makeup products, those popular Mighty Patch pimple patches, or even just a NOSHINKU eucalyptus hand sanitizer spray, you might not realize just how much goes on behind the scenes to keep everything secure. As a fellow retail worker, I’ve had my eyes opened to the incredible lengths Asset Protection (AP) teams go to prevent theft, and honestly, it’s mind-blowing. One of the biggest questions I get is, 'How does Target know if you stole?' The answer is, they have eyes everywhere, and I mean *everywhere*. The camera systems are incredibly advanced – not just countless cameras, but with amazing zoom and clarity. They can focus on a single item in your hand from across the store, tracking your movements from the minute you walk in. Even areas like guest services and the self-checkout lanes, which seem busy and chaotic, are under constant, intense scrutiny. They’re looking for specific behaviors, not just obvious acts. Many people wonder about the dressing room. While there are no cameras inside the dressing rooms for privacy, AP absolutely monitors who goes in and out, how many items they take with them, and how many they return with. They’re trained to spot nervous behavior or people trying to conceal items before entering. If you walk into a dressing room with five items and only come out with three, and there’s no trace of the other two, that’s a huge red flag. They’ll likely monitor you more closely from that point on, if not approach you directly. And can AP see suspect transactions a week later? Absolutely! Everything is logged digitally. Every item scanned, every payment method, every return – it’s all connected to specific times and, often, to video footage of that transaction. If an inventory discrepancy comes up, or a pattern of suspicious returns emerges, the AP team can easily pull up past transactions and review the associated video. It’s not just about catching people in the act; it’s about building a case with solid evidence, even if the incident happened days or weeks ago. It’s not just external theft, either; employee theft is a significant concern for all retailers. It's a sad truth, but sometimes the people working alongside you are the ones causing loss. AP handles this with extreme discretion, often through internal audits, close monitoring of cash registers, and tracking inventory shrinkage at specific times or shifts. The consequences for employee theft are usually much more severe than for shoplifting, involving immediate termination and often criminal charges. I've heard stories that would make your jaw drop about what some employees tried to get away with, but eventually, they were caught because AP has internal protocols designed specifically for that. So, while you're admiring the seasonal Halloween decorations or just doing your weekly shopping, remember that there's a highly sophisticated system in place to protect merchandise and ensure fair play for everyone. It makes you realize just how much planning goes into loss prevention, and why, as an employee, I truly believe it's incredibly difficult for anyone to steal successfully from Target without eventually being caught.

The cameras at Target are no joke, they're everywhere! It's kinda scary how much they can see.
