The account of former corrections officer Barbara Devine is a telling example. Despite security measures like K-9 unit sniffing, staff have found ways to bring in methamphetamine and contraband concealed on their person. This highlights an important gap in prison security protocols — the human factor. Even the most sophisticated surveillance can be compromised when trusted employees decide to break rules. Moreover, the data showing over 56,000 drug confiscations since 2020 indicates a systemic problem rather than isolated incidents. The fact that 390 vendors have been banned and over 335 employees marked not recommended for rehire further signifies ongoing challenges in staff oversight. While inmates and visitors are closely monitored, staff concealment methods including hiding contraband in bras, underwear, and lunchboxes reveal a need for more rigorous, yet respectful, security approaches.
