Santorini

Trying new things downtown Palm Springs. You don't see much street photography here, outside of cars and mid century homes, which is great and I really enjoy it. But that's really what it's known for photography wise, and I hope to change that with a group, and a blog focused on the topic.

Palm Springs

... Read moreExploring downtown Palm Springs through street photography offers a fresh perspective that many overlook. While the area is renowned for its classic cars and iconic mid-century architecture, there’s much more to capture if you look closely. I’ve found that adopting an urban minimalism approach helps highlight the subtle beauty in this desert city—whether it's the patterns of shadows on sun-bleached walls or the sleek lines of Palm Springs’ vintage vehicles. Starting a photography group and blog dedicated to this niche has been a rewarding experience. It encourages local photographers to share their unique visions and challenges us all to move beyond typical scenic shots. Moreover, integrating a focus on street scenes allows us to document the vibrant and diverse culture of Palm Springs, which is often overshadowed by its iconic landmarks. One unexpected highlight has been discovering the variety of textures and colors found in everyday urban settings. From the bold typography on signage like "SANTORINI GREEK & MEDITERRANEAN FOOD" to the minimalist symmetry of storefronts, these details enrich the storytelling element of photography. For photographers using equipment like the Nikon D800, Palm Springs provides ample opportunity to experiment with light and composition. The desert sun creates sharp contrasts that can be challenging but rewarding to capture. Sharing tips on exposure settings and post-processing techniques within the community has greatly enhanced our collective work. If you’re interested in joining this growing movement or wish to improve your street photography skills, consider focusing your lens on overlooked urban details and local culture. Palm Springs is a canvas waiting to be discovered through your camera lens, and together we can redefine what street photography means in this unique environment.
