God’s Word is the Foundation of Our Marriage

When I first heard the idea of loving God more than my spouse, it sounded counterintuitive. But through our journey, my husband and I have truly discovered that this principle is the bedrock of an unconditionally loving and blessed marriage. It's not about loving your partner less, but about letting God's perfect love fill you first, so you can pour that out into your relationship. This foundational truth means we constantly turn to God's Word for guidance, especially when navigating life's ups and downs. It's His blueprint for how we treat each other, how we forgive, and how we grow together. It grounds us and reminds us that our love story is part of a much bigger divine plan. We've seen His faithfulness in so many areas. For example, I vividly remember us praying for a new car, and God answered, reminding us of Philippians 4:19 NLT: 'And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.' What a blessing! And after having three wonderful boys, our deepest desire was to have a daughter. We held onto Psalms 37:4 NLT, 'Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.' And truly, He blessed us with our sweet girl! These aren't just isolated events; they are testaments to how God intimately cares for our family and marriage. Marriage isn't always easy, and there have been times of struggle. During those seasons, His Word became our lifeline. We clung to verses that speak of patience, kindness, and perseverance. For couples facing hard times, remember that God's love is steadfast. Leaning on scriptures like Romans 12:12, 'Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer,' helps us navigate rough patches. Even when we've needed reconciliation, 1 John 4:7-8 (NLT) reminds us, 'Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God... God is love.' This pushes us to extend grace and seek healing. For those starting a new marriage, building on this foundation from day one is crucial. Verses like Ephesians 4:2-3, 'Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace,' offer timeless wisdom. And for our daily walk, 1 John 3:18 NLT, 'Dear children, let's not merely say that we love others; let us show the truth by our actions,' constantly challenges us to demonstrate love actively. The Bible also gives beautiful guidance on the roles within marriage, not as restrictive rules, but as ways to serve and honor each other. For a woman, embracing a spirit of respect and partnership, as encouraged in Ephesians 5:33, 'However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband,' creates a harmonious environment. It's about complementary strengths, supporting each other in our God-given callings, and growing closer to God together, as Psalms 18:1 NLT beautifully illustrates regarding our own strengthening bond as we draw near to Him. So, how do we practically apply this? It's about daily prayer together, reading the Bible as a couple, discussing what God's Word means for your specific situation, and truly seeking His will. It's about celebrating His blessings, whether it's traveling the world together (1 Thessalonians 5:16 NLT: 'Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you') or just finding joy in the everyday. When God's Word is the foundation, your marriage becomes a testament to His unwavering love, filled with unconditional acceptance and abundant blessings.
