Why is the US the worst at what matters and the best at unnecessary military spending?

2025/3/19 Edited to

... Read moreIt's something I've been thinking about a lot lately – the huge difference in how our country spends money, especially when you compare military budgets to what's allocated for social welfare. When I saw that chart about how many hours a single person needs to work at minimum wage just to escape poverty in the US compared to other nations like Japan, it really hit home. Eighty hours a week just to get by? That's not just a number; it feels like a relentless struggle. We constantly hear about our massive military budget, often in the trillions, and while national defense is undoubtedly important, sometimes it truly feels like that colossal investment overshadows vital domestic needs. I'm talking about fundamental things like accessible healthcare, truly affordable housing, quality education for everyone, and robust support systems for those who are struggling. It makes you wonder what kind of impact even a fraction of that spending could have if redirected towards improving the lives of everyday citizens. That 80-hour work week to escape the poverty line, as shown in the data, isn't just a statistic; it represents countless individuals and families working incredibly hard, often juggling multiple jobs, just to keep their heads above water. It's a stark contrast to places like Japan, where the barrier is so much lower at 14 hours. This isn't just about 'welfare' in the traditional sense; it's about the basic ability for people to thrive, not merely survive. It highlights a system where the minimum wage often traps people in a cycle of poverty, no matter how diligently they work. It makes you stop and think: if even a portion of what goes into military spending was redirected towards strengthening our social safety nets, what kind of positive ripple effect could that have across the nation? Imagine a country where fewer people are caught in a poverty trap, where a minimum wage actually allows for a dignified life, and where basic needs are met without such extreme struggle. This isn't about dismantling our defense, but about finding a better balance. I've heard all the arguments about the necessity of a strong military for global stability, and I understand that perspective to a degree. However, I also deeply believe that a truly strong nation is built from within – by ensuring its citizens are healthy, educated, and secure. Prioritizing human well-being and social equity seems like a fundamental strength, too, one that can lead to a more stable and prosperous society overall. It's a different kind of national security. This isn't an easy balance to strike, but for me, seeing that 80-hour figure just reinforces the urgency of this discussion. It's a conversation we need to have more often as a society: what truly constitutes national security and prosperity? Is it solely military might, or does it also encompass the economic and social security of every person living here, ensuring that working hard actually leads to escaping poverty rather than just treading water?
