Just to bookworms having fun

2025/7/13 Edited to

... Read moreOh, the joys (and subtle pressures!) of being a parent to a passionate bookworm. I swear, it felt like a full year of my teen asking me to read Percy Jackson before I finally caved. And honestly? I'm so glad I did! It's been an absolute blast diving into Rick Riordan's world of Greek gods and demigods. Each chapter she'd pop up, bright-eyed, asking, "So, what do you think about Percy now?" It brings back memories of when she first discovered The Hunger Games and couldn't put it down. That intensity, that complete immersion – it's something special to witness as a parent. These books, whether it's Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, or even the beloved Harry Potter series, have this incredible power to captivate young minds and, let's be honest, adult ones too. What is it about them that makes them so enduringly popular, creating entire communities of passionate readers? I think it boils down to a few core elements: incredible world-building that sweeps you away, relatable characters facing impossible odds, and themes that resonate deeply, like friendship, loyalty, and standing up for what's right. With Percy Jackson, I'm constantly amazed by how Riordan weaves ancient mythology into a modern-day adventure. It's educational without ever feeling like a textbook, which is genius. Similarly, The Hunger Games, while darker, sparks conversations about society, survival, and rebellion. And who can forget the magic and wonder of Harry Potter, which truly defined a generation? Each of these series creates a unique bond between reader and story, making them more than just books – they become experiences. For any other parents out there with bookworm teens, my biggest advice is to lean into it. Even if you're not usually a fantasy reader, sharing these stories creates such a wonderful connection. We’ve had so many fantastic discussions comparing characters, debating plot twists, and even talking about which house we’d be in if we were at Hogwarts (yes, Harry Potter discussions are still very much alive in our house!). It's not just about the books; it's about fostering that love for reading, critical thinking, and shared imagination. It’s also a great way to sneak in some quality time together, even if it's just for a few minutes between chapters. So, if you're on the fence about picking up a series your teen is obsessed with, take this as your sign. Dive into the world of Percy Jackson, or revisit the districts of The Hunger Games, or even cast a spell with Harry Potter. You might just find yourself discovering a new favorite and, more importantly, making lasting memories with your young reader. Now, if only I could get her to stop checking in every two chapters…
