Unlike traditional squats, Bulgarian split squats engage not only the quadriceps but also the glutes and hamstrings, offering a comprehensive strength-building routine. One of the reasons I love them is their ability to improve balance and stability, as performing them requires single-leg strength and coordination. Incorporating Bulgarian split squats into my workouts has helped me enhance muscle symmetry since this unilateral movement ensures both legs are worked evenly. Over time, I noticed improved posture and reduced knee discomfort, likely because the exercise strengthens muscles around the knee joint without putting excessive strain on it. The versatility of Bulgarian split squats is another advantage. You can do them with just your body weight, or add dumbbells or a barbell to increase resistance, making them suitable for all fitness levels. Additionally, they don't require much space, so you can do them at home or in the gym. For those starting out, I recommend beginning with bodyweight first to master the form. Ensure your front foot is far enough ahead to keep your knee aligned over your ankle and avoid leaning forward. Gradually, add weights and increase reps as your strength and confidence grow. Overall, Bulgarian split squats have become a staple in my routine for building strong, balanced legs and a firm core. If you're looking for an effective lower body exercise that delivers functional strength, I highly recommend giving Bulgarian split squats a try.
