Building my cottagecore dream backyard 🌿✨ Episode 7

This week I realized two garden beds definitely weren’t going to be enough. 😅 We added some wooden barrel planters and a few galvanized horse troughs that fit perfectly along our fence line.

As a complete beginner gardener, I’m very much figuring things out as I go, so if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them. 🌱

Now we just have to fill all these beds with soil… wish us luck. 🤭

I quickly learned that two garden beds weren't nearly enough to bring my dream to life, which led me to add some unique planters like wooden barrels and galvanized horse troughs that elevate the rustic aesthetic while providing ample planting space. If you're also starting out, a few tips I found invaluable include properly filling these containers with good quality, well-draining soil mixed with compost to ensure nutrient retention and healthy plant growth. Filling large containers like barrels and troughs can be a workout, but breaking the task into stages helps—start by adding a layer of gravel at the bottom for drainage before adding soil. One interesting approach is to choose companion plants that thrive together and fit the cottagecore vibe—think lavender, rosemary, and delicate wildflowers. These not only look charming but can help support each other against pests. Since soil quality is pivotal, I recommend adding organic matter frequently and monitoring moisture levels because containers tend to dry out faster than ground beds. Experimenting with different plants each season can provide insights on what suits your environment best. Finally, don’t hesitate to reach out to local gardening communities or online forums like #beginnergardener or #cottagecoregarden for advice and motivation. Learning through trial and error is part of the joy of creating your dream garden, and every step brings you closer to a lush, tranquil outdoor space that truly feels like your own cottagecore retreat.
