In my experience, leading a team is less about controlling every action and more about empowering each individual to take ownership of their role. The notion that each person is their own CEO really resonated with me because it puts the responsibility of motivation and drive squarely on the team member, not just the leader. I’ve found that when team members are genuinely coachable, hungry, and committed, they don’t need constant pushing or micromanagement. Instead, they thrive under clear leadership that provides direction and support. For instance, during a project I managed recently, I made it a point to identify team members who showed eagerness to learn and take initiative. Giving them autonomy and trust led to remarkable results, much more than if I had tried to impose my will on everyone. One key insight is that you can teach skills and share knowledge, but motivation has to come from within. As the quote noted, "We can teach, coach, inspire, collaborate, and have fun together—but we can't motivate. That has to come from within each one of us." This mindset changed how I approach recruitment and team development, focusing on attitude and internal drive rather than just technical skills. To avoid burnout as a leader, it's critical to differentiate between leading and babysitting. Babysitting drains energy because you’re trying to compensate for a lack of motivation. Leading, though, is invigorating because you’re partnering with people who want to succeed and grow. I encourage any leader to really assess whether they’re investing their time in serious-minded individuals or those merely interested without commitment. Finally, building a team that moves forward together requires ongoing communication, acknowledgment of efforts, and cultivating a shared vision. When everyone knows they’re valued and have personal responsibility for their outcomes, the results are powerful and sustainable.
