How To Handle Betrayal
There was a time I didn’t handle betrayal well.
I’ve had moments where I was lied on, overlooked, talked about, and stabbed in the back by people I never expected it from. And I’ll be honest—there’s something very human that rises up in you in those moments… the urge to get even. To make it balance. To make them feel what you felt.
But this morning shifted something in me.
I read Proverbs 20:22: “Do not say, ‘I’ll pay you back for this wrong!’ Wait for the Lord, and He will avenge you.”
And it hit different.
Because what I realized is this: every time I tried to mentally rehearse payback, I was carrying weight that was never mine to carry. I was holding on to people who had already moved on. I was delaying my own peace trying to collect a debt that was never mine to collect.
Today, I see it clearer.
My job was never to avenge what was done to me. My job was to stay aligned, stay grounded, and keep building anyway. Life has a way of revealing truth over time. What’s done in darkness doesn’t stay hidden. What’s done in honesty doesn’t need defending.
And here’s the real breakthrough:
When you stop trying to “fix” people through retaliation, you make space for God to handle what your emotions were trying to control.
That doesn’t mean what happened was okay. It doesn’t erase the hurt. It means I no longer have to let the hurt lead me.
So if you’re in that place right now—betrayed, misunderstood, or wrongly done—don’t rush to return it.
Let it go.
Keep building.
Keep your heart clean.
Because time has a way of revealing everything… and justice always finds its way without you having to lose yourself trying to deliver it.
Dealing with betrayal can feel like an emotional storm, but over time, I've learned that the path to healing lies in releasing the desire for revenge. From personal experience, holding onto resentment only prolongs pain and prevents us from living fully. What truly helped me was embracing patience and allowing time to reveal the truth, just as Proverbs 20:22 encourages. One key insight I've gained is that forgiveness isn't about excusing the hurt but about freeing yourself. When you hold on to grudges or try to seek payback, you carry emotional burdens that weigh you down. Instead, focusing on your own growth and values helps rebuild your peace and self-worth. Practices like journaling your feelings, talking to trusted friends, or engaging in mindfulness can be powerful tools to realign yourself. I've also found that faith, prayer, or meditation creates a supportive space to let go of control over others' actions and trust in a higher justice. This shift doesn’t erase the betrayal but reduces its power over your life. Remember, trust takes time to rebuild — in others and in yourself. Allow yourself to heal at your own pace without rushing to fix the situation or people who have caused pain. Ultimately, choosing to move forward with a clean heart invites new opportunities for genuine connection and happiness.
