TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHICKENS COOL

this last week southern california got hit with a heat wave and a bunch of wildfires. a couple of days last week it hit around 112° which is way too hot for your chickens. I found these tips to be super helpful to keep your chickens, cool and comfortable.

• FROZEN FRUIT

my chickens are obsessed with frozen fruit, especially watermelon and mixed berries. I like to keep them in the freezer each week just so when it gets to be the hottest temperature throughout that day, I like to put it in a foil pan.

• FROZEN WATER BOTTLES

I like to freeze old water bottles, even milk jugs and use them inside the chickens water sources so it keeps it cool longer for their drinking water.

You can also create a misting system with fine sprays of water to help lower the ambient temperature in their environment. In addition to frozen fruits, consider providing electrolyte-rich solutions in their drinking water to combat heat stress. Both Gatorade and specialized poultry electrolytes can be effective. Ensuring your chickens have access to fresh, cool water at all times is vital, especially during peak heat hours. Placing several water stations around the coop encourages them to hydrate more readily. Monitor your chickens closely for signs of heat distress, such as panting, lethargy, or reluctance to eat, and take immediate action if you notice any concerning behavior. A little preparation and attention can go a long way in keeping your chickens happy and healthy during the sweltering summer months.
