Ever wondered if you could achieve those gorgeous, salon-quality nails right from your living room? I did, and that's why I finally decided to dive into the world of polygel nails! For the longest time, I was intimidated by gel extensions and acrylics, but a friend convinced me to try a polygel starter set, and honestly, it's been a game-changer for my DIY manicures. When you're first looking into polygel, the sheer number of products can feel a bit overwhelming. But a good polygel nails starter set usually has everything a beginner needs to get going. Mine came with several polygel tubes in different colors, a UV/LED lamp (super important!), a base coat, a top coat, slip solution, dual forms, a brush/spatula tool, and even a nail file and buffer. For me, the biggest draw was how much easier it is to work with compared to traditional acrylics. Acrylics have a strong odor and dry super fast, meaning you have to be quick and precise. Polygel, on the other hand, is much more forgiving. It doesn't set until you cure it under the lamp, giving you plenty of time to sculpt and perfect your nail shape. Here’s a quick rundown of how I use my starter set: Nail Prep is Key: Always start with clean, prepped nails. Push back cuticles, gently buff the nail plate, and dehydrate with alcohol. This helps the polygel adhere better and last longer. Base Coat: Apply a thin layer of base coat and cure it under your UV/LED lamp for about 60 seconds. This acts as an adhesive layer. Apply Polygel: Squeeze a small bead of polygel onto the dual form (or directly onto your nail if free-handing). Dip your brush into the slip solution – just enough to keep the polygel from sticking – and gently pat and sculpt the polygel into your desired shape and length within the form. Cure Time: Place the dual form onto your prepped nail, pressing gently. Wipe away any excess that squeezes out. Then, cure under the lamp. The curing time varies by lamp and polygel brand, but usually, it's 60-120 seconds. Shape & Refine: Once cured, gently remove the dual form. You'll be left with a perfectly shaped nail! Now, file and buff any rough edges to refine the shape and smooth the surface. Top Coat: Finish with a layer of top coat and cure one last time. This adds shine and seals everything in. My biggest tip for anyone just starting out with a polygel starter set is to practice patience. Your first few attempts might not be perfect, and that's totally okay! Start with thinner layers of polygel, as it's easier to build up than to remove excess. Also, make sure your nails are thoroughly prepped to avoid lifting. I've found watching a few YouTube tutorials specifically for beginners using dual forms incredibly helpful.
