Wow, what a journey it's been since I first decided to get my CDL! The training itself felt like a marathon, both mentally and physically. I remember pouring over manuals, practicing pre-trip inspections until I could do them in my sleep, and the countless hours behind the wheel of a massive tractor-trailer. For anyone considering trucking, those early days of training are crucial. We spent so much time not just learning to drive, but understanding the mechanics, safety regulations, and how to maneuver these giants in tight spots. I wish I had taken more training photos back then to show the progression – especially those tricky parallel parking maneuvers! – but trust me, the growth from day one to passing the exam was immense. One of the biggest challenges during training was mastering the backing maneuvers. It’s so different from driving a regular car, and your spatial awareness needs to be on point. There were days I felt like I'd never get it right, but persistence is key. My instructors were fantastic, always emphasizing safety and precision, which really stuck with me. They taught us the importance of checking mirrors, getting out and looking (G.O.A.L.), and anticipating traffic. These lessons proved invaluable once I was on the road independently. After getting my CDL, the next big step was finding the right company. That’s how I ended up with May Trucking. Their onboarding process was thorough, and I felt incredibly supported as a new driver. They paired me with an experienced mentor for my first few runs, which made a huge difference. There’s a certain excitement mixed with a lot of nerves when you’re finally out there, not with an instructor, but with your own load. My first load delivery took me to *Kansas City*, and I can still feel the mix of anticipation and slight anxiety as I navigated the unfamiliar roads. Every turn, every merge, every backing maneuver felt like a test, but also a confirmation that all that hard work in training was paying off. The satisfaction of successfully delivering that first load was incredible. It’s more than just a job; it’s a lifestyle *on the road*. You learn so much about yourself, about planning, logistics, and problem-solving. One thing I've quickly realized is the importance of time management and staying organized. From managing your logbook to planning your routes and breaks, every detail matters. And let's not forget the camaraderie you find with other truckers – it’s a unique community out there. My advice to anyone looking at CDL training: embrace every moment. Ask questions, practice endlessly, and don't be afraid to make mistakes during training – that's what it's for! Document your journey, even if it's just mental notes, because those early experiences are priceless. Once you're out there, it’s a whole different ball game, but an incredibly rewarding one. The independence, seeing new places, and knowing you’re contributing to getting goods where they need to go, it's truly something special.
