Dress Like Your Age

What does that even mean.

I am 47. Yes, I take good care of myself. But I believe the most important thing you will ever wear is not your outfit, your makeup, or the label on your bag. It is your energy.

Your energy always precedes you.

Have you ever been in a room and felt a shift before you even saw who walked in. Your head turns. You feel it. That is presence. That is what people respond to first.

Clothes are simply the finishing touch. The cherry on top. They are meant to enhance how you already feel, not compensate for insecurity or something you are trying to prove.

Last night at Ulta Beauty, the associate helping me had on the most incredible gem embellished belt. It sparked a genuine conversation. Not because it was expensive or trendy, but because it was intentional. You could tell he felt good wearing it. That confidence created connection.

When someone tells you to dress your age, I think the real question is this. Where are you at in your life. Where is your head. How do you feel emotionally, mentally, physically. All of these states are connected.

I am not talking about perfection. I am talking about presence.

This has been my personal practice for over twenty years. I do not deny hard days. I allow myself to feel sadness, anger, grief. I let emotions move through me, but I do not live there. I give myself a limit. Then I consciously shift my state.

I move my body. I get fresh air. I go for long walks. I go to the gym. I change environments. I engage in conversations with friends and sometimes with strangers. I choose a different state of experience.

I was a practicing life coach for several years, and this is exactly what I guided my clients through. Change your state, and everything else follows.

Outfit of the day is not really about the clothes.

It is about asking yourself, what will my presence be today.

How am I choosing to show up for myself before the world even sees me.

That choice sets the tone for your entire day. And over time, it shifts everything, even on a cellular level.

People ask how I stay youthful. This is part of it. Not resisting life. Not labeling myself as old. Not letting negative moments define me.

If you think life is hard, it will be. If you think you are old, no matter your age, you will be.

I once told a friend on a long walk that I was not in his age category. We are the same age, but the way he was talking made it sound like people our age were already senior citizens. I looked at him and said, speak for yourself. I am not in your age group. He laughed so hard for a good five minutes and told me he had not laughed like that in years. That moment alone shifted his entire state.

Presence does that.

So when you think about outfit of the day, think about the energy you are choosing to wear. That is what truly defines style. Not age.

... Read moreI've found through my own experience that dressing well is far less about following age-based fashion rules and far more about tuning into how I feel each day. This resonates deeply with the idea that "your energy always precedes you." When I embrace this mindset, I notice how others respond more to my vibe than the clothes themselves. One practical way I’ve enhanced this presence is by intentionally choosing pieces that reflect my current mood and mindset—not necessarily what's "supposed" to be age-appropriate. For example, incorporating bold statement accessories, much like the gem-embellished belt mentioned, can spark genuine connection with others because they convey confidence and intentionality. Over time, I've noticed how this approach to dressing aligns with my emotional wellbeing. On tougher days, I give myself permission to feel my emotions but then deliberately shift my state—whether by going for a walk or changing my environment—to bring renewed energy into my outfit choices. It's not just about looking youthful or trendy, but rather about embodying a presence that influences my daily interactions and even my cellular vibe. This philosophy has helped me break free from limiting beliefs about age and style that society often imposes. It’s empowering to reject the stereotype that certain looks are reserved for specific ages and instead focus on expressing the unique energy I bring into any room. Truly, "presence does that." This mindset transformed not only how I dress but also how I experience life, helping me stay vibrant and connected regardless of age. In summary, "dress like your age" isn't a fixed rule, but an invitation to check in with yourself and wear what aligns with your authentic presence. Your style becomes a reflection of your inner state, which is the most compelling and timeless look you can wear.
