การดูแลสุขภาพน้องเป็ด Call Duck นอกจากการตรวจเช็คอึตามสีและลักษณะที่กล่าวมาแล้ว ยังควรใส่ใจพฤติกรรมและสภาพแวดล้อมรอบตัวด้วย เพราะสิ่งเหล่านี้ส่งผลโดยตรงต่อสุขภาพน้องเป็ดได้มากทีเดียว จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว ผมพบว่าน้องเป็ดที่เลี้ยงในพื้นที่ที่มีอากาศถ่ายเทดี และวางอาหารที่สดใหม่เหมาะสม จะมีอึในกลุ่มสีปกติ เช่น สีเขียวสดหรือน้ำตาลเข้มพร้อมส่วนขาว ๆ (Urates) ซึ่งบ่งบอกว่าระบบย่อยอาหารทำงานได้ดี ส่วนหนึ่งที่คนเลี้ยงมักมองข้ามคือการรักษาความสะอาดที่อยู่อาศัย เช่น ทำความสะอาดบ่อหรือที่นอนเป็นประจำ เพราะหากสถานที่เลี้ยงสกปรก นอกจากจะกระตุ้นให้เกิดโรคในระบบทางเดินอาหารแล้ว ยังสามารถทำให้น้องเป็ดเครียดและภูมิคุ้มกันลดลง ส่งผลให้อึเปลี่ยนสีผิดปกติ เช่น สีเหลืองสดหรือมีเลือดปนได้ อีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่ควรสังเกตคืออาการอื่น ๆ ควบคู่ไปกับการดูอึ เช่น การซึมหรือเบื่ออาหาร หากเห็นอึสีขาวล้วนหรือมีลักษณะเป็นน้ำมากร่วมด้วย ควรรีบพาน้องเป็ดพบสัตวแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญสัตว์ Exotic Pet โดยด่วน เพราะอาจเป็นสัญญาณของโรคไตวายหรือภาวะขาดสารอาหารที่รุนแรง สำหรับอาหาร ควรหลีกเลี่ยงการให้อาหารผักหรือผลไม้จำนวนมากเกินไปจนมีอึสีเขียวสดบ่อย ๆ ซึ่งอาจบ่งบอกถึงปัญหาตับหรือการติดเชื้อแบคทีเรีย และหมั่นให้อาหารที่มีส่วนผสมของก้อนกรวดบด (Grit) เพื่อช่วยกระบวนการย่อยอาหาร ป้องกันอึที่ออกมาเป็นเม็ด ๆ ซึ่งมักเกี่ยวข้องกับปัญหาทางเดินอาหาร สุดท้าย ผมอยากแนะนำให้เจ้าของเป็ดคอลดั๊กทุกคนปฏิบัติการส่องอึแบบนี้ทุกวัน เพียงวันละ 1 นาทีเพื่อรับรู้สัญญาณสุขภาพของน้องเป็ดอย่างรวดเร็ว และหากพบความผิดปกติ อย่าลังเลที่จะปรึกษาสัตวแพทย์ เพราะสุขภาพและความสุขของน้องเป็ดนั้นขึ้นอยู่กับการใส่ใจของเราโดยตรง
