Why I left being a Career Nanny, but still babysit

I started working with children when I was just 13. My first experiences were with students who had special needs at my school, and from there I began babysitting. By 21, I became a full-time nanny and completely fell in love with the work. I adored the families I supported, and I was deeply connected to the children I cared for.

But after two years, I realized something was missing. While I found purpose in helping raise amazing kids, I was spending more than six hours a day without any adult interaction. That part became harder over time, especially as I started thinking about my long-term goals and what I needed in a career to feel balanced.

At 23, I stepped away from being a career nanny and took a new path. I earned a degree in education and started building experience in other areas. But I never stopped loving the actual work of childcare. That’s why I still babysit on evenings and weekends. Babysitting gives me the flexibility I never had as a full-time nanny. I’m able to choose the hours I work, the families I support, and still maintain a strong connection to something that’s always brought me joy.

On top of that, the pay is significantly better for less time, and I’m no longer relying on childcare as my main source of income. I have a full-time job I enjoy, and part-time childcare allows me to keep that part of my life alive without sacrificing my own needs.

Leaving the nanny world full-time wasn’t easy, but it was right for me. Babysitting has given me the chance to stay connected to the work I love - just on my own terms.

... Read moreMy journey away from full-time nannying wasn't about falling out of love with childcare, but rather about finding a way to make it fit my life better. The constant juggle of long hours, limited adult interaction, and the challenge of balancing personal goals with demanding family schedules eventually led me to look for a different path. That's where platforms like Sittercity really shine, offering a flexible lifeline for those who still adore working with children but need more control over their careers. For anyone considering a similar transition, or just looking for flexible babysitting gigs, Sittercity has been a game-changer. It allows you to set your own rates, choose your availability, and connect with families that are the right fit for you. This means you're no longer tied to one family's demanding schedule, providing the freedom to pursue other interests or a full-time career, much like I did by going back to school and establishing a new professional role. I've found that this autonomy is key to maintaining that joy in childcare without the burnout. One of the biggest advantages I've personally experienced with Sittercity is the ability to truly dictate my terms. You create a detailed profile, highlighting your experience – perhaps you've worked with students who had special needs, or you have a background in education. You can upload photos, showcase your personality, and even mention specific skills. This transparency helps you attract families who genuinely align with your approach and expectations. It’s a far cry from the sometimes-isolating nature of full-time nannying, where adult interaction can be minimal. Setting your rates is another huge plus. Many part-time babysitters on Sittercity find they can earn significantly more per hour than they did as full-time nannies, simply because the work is on-demand and specialized. This 'better pay for less time' aspect, as I've mentioned before, is incredibly empowering. It means you can maintain a connection to childcare, keep those skills sharp, and still have your main source of income coming from another fulfilling career. It truly allows for a balanced life. When I'm taking on a babysitting gig, whether it's an evening or a weekend, I love that I'm able to keep that spark alive. It's rewarding to connect with different families and children, offering a fresh perspective each time. The kind of flexible roles I now enjoy, sometimes involving after-school care (like those 'BASC' settings you might see on lanyards, signifying programs or affiliations), are easily found on these platforms, allowing for diverse experiences beyond traditional nannying. The platform makes it easy to communicate, schedule, and get paid securely. For someone like myself, who found purpose in helping raise amazing kids but needed to reclaim personal time, Sittercity provides the perfect bridge. It’s about staying connected to what you love, but on your own terms, making sure that your personal well-being and long-term goals are always a priority. The flexibility just makes it all possible.

I feel this on another level. Finding that balance between work you love and your personal space is lowkey underrated. Might try balancing my own side gigs too.
