A Career Glow-Up: Investing In HIPPA & Leadership
Today I am spending time completing several types of training on HealthStream. Right now, I’m working through a HIPAA course, which is an important reminder of how essential confidentiality is in healthcare.
Professional development is something I value deeply. I believe that going above and beyond what is required not only strengthens my skills but also allows me to bring more to my role and to those I serve. Once I finish the courses required by my job, I often look for additional trainings that spark my interest.
Over time, this approach has allowed me to explore a wide range of topics including grief and loss, leadership, communication skills, HIPAA, and many more. Each course helps me grow both personally and professionally, and I enjoy applying what I learn in my daily work.
For me, professional development is not just about checking boxes. It’s about curiosity, growth, and a commitment to being the best version of myself in the workplace.

Investing time in professional development, especially through targeted training such as HIPAA courses, plays a critical role in ensuring healthcare workers maintain high standards of confidentiality, patient privacy, and regulatory compliance. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), enacted in 1996, sets strict rules that safeguard patient information and guide healthcare professionals on privacy practices and security protocols. Understanding the Administrative Simplification provisions, which include the Privacy Rule and Security Rule, helps healthcare workers prevent common violations and protect sensitive data in both physical and electronic formats. Effective HIPAA training covers a range of essential topics, including the role of healthcare workers in compliance, the rights of patients related to their protected health information (PHI), and the responsibilities of the designated privacy officers within healthcare institutions. Learning how to identify, respond to, and prevent security risks through administrative, physical, and technical safeguards ensures that patient information is handled responsibly. Beyond compliance, continuous professional development fosters broader competencies such as leadership, grief management, and communication skills, which are vital in delivering empathetic and effective patient care. Pursuing training beyond the required courses demonstrates a commitment to growth, enabling healthcare workers to adapt to evolving healthcare regulations and industry standards. Ultimately, professional growth through comprehensive healthcare training not only fulfills legal obligations but also enhances personal and professional capabilities. This holistic development approach benefits healthcare teams, patients, and institutions, promoting a culture of excellence and trust within the healthcare environment.

That's so inspiring! I'm gonna look into some training courses too, it's important to keep learning and growing
