48 Hour Rule

When life disappoints you, or you disappoint yourself, use 24 hours to cry about it. Then, use the next 24 to remember who you are & prepare for what God has for you next.😇

... Read moreWe all face moments when life just feels like it's letting us down, or maybe we feel like we've let ourselves down. I’ve been there more times than I can count. For a long time, I either tried to bottle everything up or let myself wallow for days. Neither approach really worked for me. That's when I stumbled upon what I now call my personal 48-hour rule, and it has genuinely transformed how I cope. The idea is beautifully simple, yet profoundly effective: when disappointment hits, you dedicate the first 24 hours to fully experiencing those emotions. No guilt, no judgment, just raw feeling. I used to think I had to be strong all the time, but I've learned that true strength also means allowing yourself to be vulnerable. During this initial 24-hour period, I let myself cry, vent to a trusted friend, journal about my frustrations, or even just listen to sad music. It's a conscious decision to acknowledge the pain and sorrow without trying to fix it immediately. This emotional release is crucial for processing what happened and preventing those feelings from festering inside. After that initial period, the next 24 hours are all about pivoting. This is where I consciously shift my focus from what went wrong to remembering who I am and preparing for what's next. It’s about reclaiming my power and cultivating a positive and hopeful mood. This doesn't mean ignoring the problem, but rather approaching it with a renewed sense of self and purpose. I might start by reminding myself of my past successes, my core values, or even just moments when I felt strong and capable. Sometimes, I look at old photos that bring a smile to my face, remembering the vibrant person I am. Just like the smiling blonde woman in the car, radiating a positive outlook, I strive to find that inner light again. Practically, this second phase involves setting small, manageable goals for myself. It could be as simple as planning my outfit for the next day, organizing my workspace, or brainstorming new ideas related to the challenge I faced. If I'm driving, I might use that time to reflect on what I've learned and what steps I can take forward. It's about taking proactive steps, however small, to rebuild momentum. This mental shift helps me to detach from the immediate sting of disappointment and look ahead with a more strategic and resilient mindset. This two-step process has significantly boosted my resilience, helping me to not only recover faster but also to learn and grow from every setback. It’s a powerful tool for anyone looking to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs with grace and inner strength.
