Kings and Queens of Africa

Africa's kings and queens have left an indelible mark in art and culture, with their legacies encapsulated in remarkable artifacts. The crowned head of an Oni unearthed from ancient Ife showcases the advanced metallurgical skills of the pre-colonial Yoruba civilization. Dating back to between the 12th and 15th centuries, this masterpiece exemplifies not only artistic brilliance but also the divine kingship that the Yoruba society revered. Similarly, equestrian figurines from West Africa, symbolizing power and speed, reveal the wealth and status of the elite during the period of trade expansion. Moreover, beaded sculptures in the Yoruba tradition serve as profound symbols of royal authority, connecting leaders with their ancestors and the divine. The Edo people's commemorative bronzes, particularly the heads crafted to honor Obas, highlight the cultural richness and artistic sophistication of the Kingdom of Benin. After the punitive expedition of 1897, around four thousand of these bronzes became part of international museum collections, furthering global appreciation for African art.
